I just came back here to calm my nerves. Spent part of the afternoon "tweaking" the resumes and composing a brilliant cover letter. Went to print. The letter okay but the print could be a little darker...graph says ink levels are fine. To the envelope...paper jam about 7 times..finally prints..again just okay. Now the resume...print is horrible..want to throw the d**n thing out the window!!!! If I try to print a recipe, article or something..no problem...when it is something really important THIS always happens!!! Thanks for the place to vent!!! I'll try again tomorrow. Now I'm going to put on some French music and have a glass of wine!!

Geory, maybe a silly question but have you tried doing a head clean? If you go to printing preferences then printer maintainance it should give you the option........sometimes I have to clean the heads 2-3 times before it prints out nice.

Geordy -- since when are recipes, etc., not "important"?? I suggest several glasses of wine -- after all, it's Friday night and how many resumes are you going to mail over the weekend anyway? By tomorrow you will have thought of something even more brilliant to say (but you've got to stop using the Google translator to write the cover letter in French -- it can give some pretty strange results!). Now, see how much better you feel? All it takes is wine, woman (you!), and song! ;D Andi -- other than shampoo (and very old tape decks), I've never heard of a "head clean"! What the heck is that?

Penny, one of these days you have to reveal your source for these things! This one is absolutey great -- I can't tell you how many times I've threatened to "fix" a computer with a sledgehammer!

I have to be very nice to my computer, lest it seek revenge and conk out on me. I'd be lost without it. I can't imagine a day without e-mail, msn chat............and this forum! ;D

Ok.....I can explain this for anyone using Windows XP (it may be different for other versions)
Go to...MY COMPUTER then CONTROL PANEL Click on PRINTERS AND FAXES RIGHT CLICK over the symbol showing your printer click on PRINTING PREFERENCES click on the section that says MAINTAINANCE here you can do a head clean, nozzle check, alignment etc
If you have a different computer, you may have a button on your printer that you press for changing ink etc.....somewhere there you should be able to do maintainance on your printer.

andiandgaz - good advice, but... different makes of printers have this option if different places. Doesn't matter which version of Windows you have as the head cleaning is part of the printer software not Windows (no, I'm not some compter geek [strange how Bill Gates hasn't worked out this is an insult yet!!] but PC's are my living - I have to get money to get to Paris somehow!)

I knew as soon as I hit post I was going to get heat over the "recipie " comment!! Of course they are important but do not have quite the same urgency of the resumes and such! Afterall I have to get a job with Health Insurance(see Sicko thread), make more money for more trips to Paris(see most threads), be fully employed so don't feel guilty about trips to Paris(!! )(see most threads, etc.!) Andi...I was lying in bed thinking I have to get to that My computer printer place, planning on it after this. Thanks for the road map!! Should of thought of that yesterday but was so frustrated with the darn envelope!! Didn't think the resume wouldn't print right!! So after the wine and music I switched to the Yankee game and they actually won!! Felt better. See what happens later! And yes Penney that's right up there with out the window!! ;D

Andi/Parisfan2 - I've looked but I don't see this anywhere for my HP. I suppose, since I'm not having a problem, I shouldn't play around with it anyway but I was curious since I'm reasonably self sufficient about computers (except for accent marks in French words!). Good luck Geordy - sometimes just the threats will make a computer straighten up!

Threats are NOT working! Tried the cleaning thing, twice. No go. Been going through all the troubleshooting steps and I'd love to shoot something!! Don't see how you go from"just okay" to nothing in one printing! Giving up for awhile... I can't bear the thought of speaking to a customer service person who is God knows where!.......thinking of Paris!!

Geordy - can you put your document on a memory stick and take it to a friend's place to print? That way at least you might have the immediate issue resolved . . . . (Did you try a total reboot of everything?)

One further suggestion, send the document in an e-mail to a friend/relative/neighbour and ask them to print it off.

Andi -- good idea, and if they wouldn't mind and are technically proficient, they maybe could even print the envelope, do an apprpoximation of a signature, and mail it!

Thanks for all the suggestions!! But Good God, what is a "memory stick??" I will put it on a disc and print off elsewhere because it has got to be in the mail Monday! Tried the "online chat customer service" They type the instruction manual to you...Duh..I tried those things..it says if they DO NOT work contact us! Oh well....and yes I did re=boot it all and even disconected it all...just what one wants to do on a summer day!

A memory stick (sometimes called a jump drive) is a little gadget about the size and shape of a package of gum, with a USB thingy on the end that plugs into any USB port on your computer. It will hold incredible amounts of data (you can find it by plugging in, and then going to "my computer" to see what's shown under the various drives). It's really a pretty amazing thing for transporting data easily!
