Shoesy, Annette and I are both in California but several hundred miles apart (although I grew up inland, in a part that routinely gets that hot in summer). We're about 30-40 degrees (F) cooler here in summer than where Annette is.

Here it gets hot, but it rarely reaches 40 degrees C. In the winter it can be as low as 10 degrees C. during the day, and when that happens I feel miserable. I don't like winter, and it annoys me to have to wear a coat. I'm very happy wearing summer clothes and sandals.

Well the 4th here was cool, overcast and then rainy and clammy! Didn't dampen the spirits..I took my trusty macaroni salad down to a friend's in the East 20's. Her apartment complex has grounds that afford a nice view of the big Fireworks spectacular. Raining a bit at the beginning but then stopped for most of the show and until I got home after midnight. Sometimes it is nice to be known as a frequent France visitor. She said she was going to get some sparkling wine, " but since YOU were coming I got Champagne!!" Hey, it was the 4th of July..Moi would have been happy with beer, wine, margaritas, whatever....but since it was there..I did partake!

Geordy, you're such a trooper -- the lengths you will go to please a friend, it's really amazing!

And as for the "freedom thing"... I remember when that all started..the "freedom fries" The local news asked a woman at the French Consulate about it. She was a bit befuddled, said that the origin of what we call French Fries was actually Belgian...and then said , With all the serious issues these days why are we talking about potatoes? ?

I will sound very unpatriotic to you, but I am going to spend the 14th of July in .... the Netherlands Actually, the kids are all away : eldest one is in Pennsylvania for the whole of July, twins are in Strasbourg (Alsace) at the grandparents' for two weeks, so hubby and I decided to make the most of our temporary childlessness and have a nice week-end away from home . And since Maastricht, NL, is only 2 1/2 hours from where we live and is supposed to be a very pretty town ... we have decided to give a miss to the 14th military parades ;D

This Saturday we will be away for the weekend at a village called Harome in the North Yorkshire Moors. On the evening we will be having dinner at The Star Inn (http://www.thestaratharome.co.uk/index.htm) where we will enjoy a bottle of William Fevre Grand Cru Chablis, and a Nuits St Georges Tribourg, Pinot Noir (2002), in celebration of Bastille Day. Can't wait! ;D

Have a fantastic weekend, Ian. I'm sure it's a lovely place, even if it isn't Paris.

Anne, If I found myself in Paris on the 4th of July I wouldn't consider it unpatriotic at all!! I'd just find myself a hotdog(or sausage) or hamburger somewhere...speaking of which I had neither here this year!!! Potato and Macaroni salad yes...and a roast beef sandwich? and watermelon and blueberries!! And ah yes..the CHAMPAGNE!! Enjoy your weekend away! You too Ian!

Thanks GM and G!! Yes, Gerody, I am an "on the rocks with salt" kinda gal. I'm looking forward to sampling the local tequilas - all in the name of research, mind you. And I do plan to study some French while I'm there, as long as my poor muddled brain doesn't get all mixed up from hearing Spanish!!

Sistereurope- that reminds me that we got the biggest laugh out of my husband (all Spanish in school) replying "Si" to the waiters in France by mistake!

Golden, I've done that (took French in highschool and Spanish in college, plus a lot of Spanish around in California), and I've also had moments when a word would pop into my head and I had to stop and think whether it was French or Spanish!
