EVERYONE in France, even those who don't like soccer (I am not a big fan) remember the 1998 World Cup . We were holidaying in a little seaside village in Brittany at that time and even this little village went completely mad . It may seem incredible to you Americans, but this victory created such a long-lasting kind of euphoria in France that it was the beginning of an economic growth . Also there was a baby boom in the spring of 1999 ...

Roniece, come on over! We'd love to have you and I'm sure your shrimp would be delish.
Geordy, Wow! What an incredible experience you stumbled into. Amazing.
Anne, your avatar makes me smile every time.

geordy, how lucky that you were there in '98! And by chance, no less! That must have really been something. I can only relate it to the Red Sox winning the World Series in '04 after an 86 year drought. The celebrations must have been remarkably similar, with a few cultual differences thrown in, eh??
And Aude, I know what you mean about Anne's avatar. It does just make you smile, doesn't it?

I think that I will have to post a REAL photo of myself one day, just so that you realize that I look like a "normal" person after all ...

Truffaut is in PARIS!!! He won't get upset about anything!! And Happy, you'll understand if I don't exactly get all warm and fuzzy and appreciate the comparison to the Red Sox victory...esp. the way things are going this year! Yes I know you're all very happy. And Shoesy, you've got baseball!!! The game was on PBS here yesterday!!!

Our Independence day is also in July, the 9th (from Spain of course). But there are no cellebrations here, just a national holliday. There is no such sense of patriotism here. There used to be military parades in the infamous days of military dictatorships, but those are over since democracy is back.

OK putting my two cents in. Would love to see the Boston Pops in Boston on the 4th. It is now only televised for an hour (the fireworks part on network TV, when PBS and A&E showed it, it was the whole program/time. The best I have seen. San Diego (way out on the peninsula, my mind blanks on name) Knoxville TN during World's Fair, from restaurant with desk on river (they turned off lights during fireworks) New Orleans, World's Fair from top of ferris wheel. My sister and BIL were at the Capital celebration two years ago when their oldest son received his 25 yr pin (for government service) from the Secretary of State. they've been several times but that one was "special".

Thanks, Luc & Shoesy I'm planning my picnic menu right now, and just added that French potato salad to the list (is that unpatriotic?! ). I don't know whether this is the start of a "perfect summer" however...it's supposed to be 111 o F here today (that's nearly 49 oC) I think we're in for a loooong hot summer--this is much too early for that kind of temperature!
