Hi Everyone
I have just arrived back from a day trip to Edinburgh where a drive through the hills of beautiful rural Northumberland and the Scottish Borders was ruined by mist and drizzle. Which brings me delicately to my point!!!
I was reading Becky's Aquitaine Trip report with some lovely photographs, and Becky mentioned the cold and wet weather. I also came across some comments about the French countryside and how it is nicer than that in the UK. So that got me thinking to why we like France above other destinations.
We love France, the country, the cities, Paris, Reims, Bordeaux, Nice, Auxerre (Chablis), the countryside, Normandy, The Loire, Aquitaine, Brittany, the Ardennes, Champagne, we love the culture, the relaxed way of life, the cafe life, Le vin!
In particular we have fallen in love with an area, just south of Tours, an area of relatively flat, and to some, uninteresting countryside.
Tomorrow I will drive to work in Durham, and I will take more notice of the view over to the Cathedral and Castle, recently voted the most beautiful building in the UK
On Friday we will be staying for the weekend in Leyburn, Wensledale, North Yorkshire. As we drive over the dale we are greeted with this view which we are enthralled by each time we see it,
And later visit West Burton Falls where the ashes of our old dogs are scattered (because we /they spent so many happy times here)
We have spent time in Switzerland, in particular the village of Les Avants, where the view from the Hotel Sonloup over the Rochers de Naye and Vevey is truly stunning.
The Rainbow Coast, around Albany and Denmark, Western Australia is awesome, and we continue to visit friends and family both here and in Perth, where a boat ride along the Swan River has some delightful vistas.
We would like to go to Boston, US in the Fall. From pictures this area looks amazing, and at some point would like to take the train journey across the Canadian Rockies.
My point is I suppose that there is beautiful scenery everywhere, and I suppose I am sticking up a little bit for the English countryside in particular.
However we return to France time after time because of the lifestyle, the villages, and the people. The area south of Tours has many of these villages, many interesting people, many Auberges, but not perhaps the degree of beautiful scenery to be found elsewhere.
Best wishes
Don't know what happened to the photos!!
