Anne, I am so effected by this book. I'm torn between enjoying the reading and the devastating and heartbreaking story of the children. If the story is accurate, the vast majority of Parisians in the roundup were children. The description of how they were taken from their parents made me crazy. I had to put the book down for the night.
I'm glad to know it is studied today in France. Whether it's Paris' worst moment or not, it must never be lost to history. I highly recommend this book.

I just ordered the Helene Berr journal and I am looking forward to read it also. But the majority of people arrested at the rafle in July 1942 were adults, in fact the number are 13, 152 including 4, 115 children. There is a commemorative monunent in the 15th arrondissement.

Luc, what is the Helene Berr journal? I remember the total number, now that you write it here, but I must be remembering the others wrong. I really want to learn more about this event. There is mention of the commemorative plaque in the book. I was trying to figure out where it is...not too far west of the Eiffel Tower?? Is that right? Also on a train station in Drancy (?), where the trains left from. Though it's not a train station any longer.

As Shoesy mentionned it is a newly discovery personal journal of a young jewish girl who was living in Paris during WWII and got deported to a nazi death camp. It is just being published and already the critics are really good. The small commemorative plaque is still there,at 8 Boulevard de Grenelle, the velodrome was demolished. Here is the location of the monument Monument commémoratif de la rafle du Vel'd'Hiv Quai de Grenelle - Place des martyrs Juifs du Vel'd'Hiv' 75015 PARIS Métro Bir Hakeim, ligne 6 (Etoile-Nation par Denfert) RER C Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel.

Randy - That reminds me to get more Cara Black's Murder Books. I really enjoyed Murder in Ile Saint-Louis.
Right now, I am alternating between My Life in France and A Pig in Provence by G. Brennan. I'm really enjoying Georgeanne's early life in Provence. How about being cold and wearing winter coats inside the Julia's Paris apartment.
Too many great books - so little time!

I just finished my first Cara Black book - Murder in the Marais - and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just before that, I read The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett which was Oprah's Book Club choice a few months ago. Oprah had said on her program that it was a book that "you can't put down" and she was right! It is long - almost 1,000 pages but worth every minute of reading. I got so involved with the characters that I actually missed them when I was finished with the book. I highly recommend it.

I am also a Cara Black fan. Just got her lastest from Amazon. I am currently reading the "Other Boyeylen Girl". Someone at work recommended it. I heard on KPCC that here is another book out about another of Henry's wives. Jayne Parker, who was initailly married to Anne Boyelyn's brother.

Ahhh, the wives of Henry VIII, divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived! That's the only way I can keep them straight in my mind.
But who is Jayne Parker, Suzanne? She wasn't married to Henry VIII, or did I misunderstand what you said?
Divorced - Kathryn of Aragon, mother of Queen Mary Beheaded - Anne Boleyn, mother of Queen Elizabeth I Died - Jane Seymour, mother of King Edward the ? Divorced - Anne of Cleves Beheaded - Catherine Howard, Anne Boleyn's cousin Survived - Catherine Paar

I'm confused myself Darcy. It has been awhile sine I studied English history. In the book I am reading now she appears to be Jayne Seymore, but they refer to her as Jayne Parker. She is to marry Anne's brother George. As aI recall she later tesitfied against him and Anne so they were both beheaded and She married the king. I guess I'll have to read that book as soon as I finish this one. I'm wondering when I'll get to my new Cara Black.

Cara Black's new book, Murder on Rue Paradis. I'm happy to see so many fans here. She is a wonderful person. I will ask her to post here after a few of us have read the book. Right now trying to get me head back to reading. When visiting my husband in the hopital, I'd take the bus and started "The Discovery of France." by Graham Robb.

Mi Mi, I noticed that Cara sometimes posts on Fodors. I have all of her books. I also have the Discovery of France. I have not had time to read it though. I have this big stack of books on my nightstand right now, and more sitting in my shopping cart at Amazon. If only I could find more time.

Yes, I invited Cara to join in when we discussed her book. I also have but not read yet, Therza Vallois' "Aveyron, A Bridge to Arcadia." There's a great photo on the cover of the Millau Bridge.

I have all of Therza's books too. We got to meet her at a speaking engagement in Carmel a few years ago. Unfortunately, the restuarant where she spoke is now gone.

Last night I finished Cara Black's eight book Murder in the Rue de Paradis. It was fun. I wonder if you can really find the fabulous clothes, Aimée, the detective finds in the flea market at the Port de Vannes. I didn't figure out who the killer was which is a plus

There is one vendor with interesting vintages pieces but you would have to go often and developped some sort of "relationship" with her, so she can save you the really good morceaux! Vanves is a bit a hit and miss, but in St Ouen there is one fabulous boutique with great clothes.

Geordy, Does that mean you don't want to know that the real murderer is, "Wait a Second, Who's THERE? WHAT!!! "NO DON"T, OHUMMMP, GASP, THUMP."
