Anyone who thinks that other countries treat Americans rudely should keep an eye on what's going on in customs/immigration on their next return, vis-a-vis non-US travelers . . . .

Reading throught that link is enought to even scare the natives. Fortunately many of the customs agents look for other things, as I was told a couple trips ago and my carefully listed food items carefully assembled from Maille mustard, Fauchon, Monoprix etc, became in one agents words: "And those food things listed, are they like all spices sort of that you cook with?" I answered "Yes." And he waived me on.

I think they rely on the dogs to find the fresh stuff (sausage, cheese, etc.) and other than that they don't worry about it much.

I know what you mean - actually, I always write down the stuff I know they won't care about in detail (chocolates, spices, tea, etc.). I don't know that it makes them decide not to bother with looking more closely into other things (not that I would skirt the regulations, of course : , but it can't hurt!

And regardless of how innocuous the foodstuff that I'm bringing back is, and how carefully I've noted it all on the landing form, I have that same guilty feeling as when you're driving past a police officer at well under the speed limit.
