This question is intended (to help) for those who will soon be traveling and may possibly be using the Metro with luggage. I had seen in posts that there were gates that you could ask attendant to open to get to platform. surprise no such thing at Gare de Nord. Maybe these are just at RER platform (?) So two questions: do all entrances to platforms have the tall sliding doors (similar to elevator)? (where you enter with ticket) does anyone have a good suggestion how to get your luggage through entrances, sliding doors or turnstile? (especially if traveling solo) I had pushed my large bag through and had carry-on over right shoulder, as I entered opening, the door started closing on me and the carry-on was stuck behind me so I could not go forward without dropping carry-on on outside. Now these doors do not open back like an elevator door would if they hit something, I had to back up and put another ticket in to get through. (which I don't think I could have done if I was using a pass). Luckily there was a nice gentlemen who held onto my bag while I backed up but I could have had it stolen So my suggestion if you are using the Metro with luggage have it in front of you the second the doors open, push forward with luggage and move quickly. If there is several in your party work in tandem, first person goes through with luggage while another feeds in ticket then puts in ticket for themselves and goes through.

Every turnstile in the system also has a large gate so that people with strollers and large packages may pass through. Simply catch the eye of the ticket booth worker and ask them to "Ouvrez la porte, s'il vous plait". The only pitfall might be those ocassions when the ticket booth is empty.

Maybe others do but the entrance to Line 4 at de Nord did not, this is why I said I was surprised because I thought if anywhere would have them (gates) Gard de Nord would. The ticket booth at de Nord is quite a ways from the platform entrance/gates. as I said luckily I had ticket rather than pass. LOL well hopefully when I return it will be through CDG and I'll use the Air France bus because being stuck in the gate was no fun!

Penny, on my very first trip to Paris (several years and 65 pounds ago) I got stuck in EXACTLY the same place you did, for EXACTLY the same reason. There was nobody in the booth, and I just knew that someday they'd find my skeleton there, still with its (newbie) suitcase overstuffed with too many clothes! I now realize, however, that there really is a "porte" there, but they're hard to see! Besides, I would have been much too terrified to ask for them to open it, at the time!)
