URGENT I knew if I kept looking, I would start altering views. Now I need help. Two weeks is a long time. All three finalists are within 50 euros of each other. Still on the list is the one bedroom apartment on Rue St. Honore. Has the basics we need and is in an area we know after the last two trips. But can't get dimensions as easily and am trying to find out abot storage space beyond one closet in bedroom. Knocked out the other apartment in the 1st as just too expensive. And the one with the Miele appliances in the Marais which ended being my favorite was even more expensive than the Palais Royal apt. Will save these till stock market and dollar improve. One finalist is in the 9th on Rochembeau, the other on Houdon in the 18th. These are not areas we know. Apartments are bigger and we could each have our own large beds in separate rooms. Hey, at our ages sleeping soundly is important so not waking when the other is nocturnal is a plus. If any forum members have stayed in the 9th and or 18th would love to hear what you have to say. Thanks. Must make decision in the next three days. Once the decision is made will stop the agonizing about what to do. But in the meantime?

Holger, If you need more, I think because you have the specific needs of both a shower stall and two beds, that rather than search a zillion places for that I would write to the following: Gail: www.perfectlyparis.comYetunde: www.feelslikehomeinparis.comSophie: www.parisianflat.comSend an e-mail to each of them. Tell them what your needs are, what your approximate dates are and what your budget is. Tell them a building with an elevator! Ask if they have something that they can offer you. These are all very respectable places, nice people and their places will have all the amenities that you need. Good luck, Joan

Thanks Gracejoan,
The VRBO apt is within our price range. But they do not have internal pictures. I have already been in touch with the people and agencies you suggested and three of the apartments now on our list are from Gail. She has been most helpful. She has a few that meet all our requirements. Now it is the areas like the 9th and 18th that I do not know. That is why I posted.
I am hoping to learn what these areas migh be like to live in.

Holger,
Send the actual apt. url's to laidback in a personal message. He will be able to tell you exactly about the particular area. He knows them well.
Montmartre is wonderful..BUT..some parts of it may have far more steps than you want to deal with!!
You will find something.....
I will send Jim and e-mail..

I would make some general comments as follows; the 1st is probably a better location for a newbie as it is by definition the center of Paris. The Houdon area is safe but borders on the Pigalle sleaze and is full of tourists being right between Pl. Pigalle and Abbesses. If uphill walking isn't your thing then this isn't your choice. It is very well served by buses and metro and has the charm of Montmartre just up the hill. The Rochambeau area is totally removed from tour buses full of Americans, Germans and Japanese, as it is a Parisian working neighborhood, but is very convenient to live...flat, adjacent to a small park, many cafés and restaurants nearby, of which my favorites within 5 min. walk are Spring, Carte Blanche and La Grille. It is also only about 2 to 300 yds. from 2 very good market streets, rue Martyrs and rue Cadet. Each neighborhood of Paris has its' own personality and devotées. It is not a matter of one being "better"than another. If you still need a heavy daily dose of Notre Dame, Louvre, Place de la Concord, Tuileries, then the location in the 1st would be better. If you prefer the sizzle and flash of lower Montmartre/Pigalle then choose Houdon. If you want to escape tourism and immerse yourself in the everyday Paris then I would choose Rochambeau. There is something for everyone in Paris.

Laidback
Thanks. This is helpful. What about Chic Clichy up near the cemetary? All three apartments are lovely and the actual apartment at Houdon appeales but I was concerned about Pigale and the area.

Holger...I did e-mail laidback..he got to you in a hurry! You might want to check this out: tinyurl.com/39mgnzLaidbacks are previewing this one with me in April. It is in the same complex as the Garden Mariotte that I have rented for a month in Spring of 2009. Excellent neighborhood..only a couple blocks from Truffaut. Not exactly certain of the shower..you would have to ask Michele. Joan

The rue Ganneron apt. is very nice...huge, on a corner of the building and on the 4th floor with a lift, all features that I look for. It should be quiet since it borders the back side of the cemetary where Truffaut, Degas, Berlioz, etc. reside. If you don't mind being away from central Paris, you could certainly do worse. I haven't personally visited this apt. but know the area.

Holger, when sistereurope, luckymama and I were going to see Cabaret at the Folie Bergeres, which is in the same area as the Rochambeau apt on your list, we all were very taken with the area and decided that it definitely merited exploration. Especially the Marche Cadet. If it's any help, it really seemed like a nice, interesting area.

Susan,
I have just been looking at these places for so many years. It can be fun...also time consuming!
That new VRBO, one just being finished will be interesting to follow up for the pictures. Even now, all one has to do is call them. They are US owners. If I were interested, I would give them a call. Sounds like a nice place. Very reasonably priced.
Going to see you in April!! Looking forward to the get together.
Joan
