Annette, I think you are absolutely right to look for style and function in your apartment. That's part of the fun. We stayed adjacent to la Madeleine and loved the area. It was more quiet at night, but for us by the time we got back to the apartment we were done for the day anyway. I like the Chez Vous 75/268 apartment(all except the 1 bathroom )

Annette, My observations..4 gals, October (one week, two week), bad knees etc. 1 bedroom/bath.....too small..don't ruin your great friendships! Vac in Paris #157 2nd floor walk up VRBO #139630 2nd floor walk up Vac in Paris #117 3rd floor with elevator, 3 B/R, 1 1/2 bath 643 sq ft $340 nite=$2380 per wk. parisvacationapartments.com/prop-palaisroyal2bedroomfirstfloor.html complete with computer and internet, concierge services, great location and lovely place, 915 sq. ft. $2450 per week. Personally, I would not have a problem in my selection...but....everyone has to make their own choices. When you have 4 people choosing, you will have different opinions from all. I am sure that you will find the "right" one for all! Joan

Thanks Joan, but when I inquired about this rental last week, it was unfortunately booked solid thru most of the year It would have been perfect! Their 2 bedroom apt. in Place des Vosges is open for a week around the time we want to go, but I think it's further from a metro than we should be for my friend with the knee problem.

;D
Hi,
I think that the Chez Vous 2 bedroom Coquelicot would be a good bet as both bedrooms have two beds, leaving the living room for late night readers, etc. When I have traveled with friends even those I have known a very long time, it is generally a fact of life that sleeping patterns vary widely and sometimes unexpectedly, e.g someone has a bout of insomnia. Thus if you can have some areas of the apartment where no one is sleeping, it works better.
In an earlier posting here, I believe I noted that the same people who have Palais Royal also have a three bedroom at the same rate or a bit less in a different location.
Good luck. I hope you get things settled soon before the apartment you decide you want is taken.
If your friend is recovering from knee surgery, you may want to check bus lines rather than metro ones as the latter frequently involve many stairs. I have knee problems and while I will use the metro it is a last resort as opposed to buses unless I am sure that there are working escalators at the involved stations.

Too bad about the Palais Royal. These are nice people..you might want to take a look at all that they have: tinyurl.com/2vtwevIt is surprising how far in advance you have to make your reservations. The good ones go in a hurry! I am finalizing a month for Spring of 2009 now! You WILL find something.......

Annette, You might want to take another look at the www.parisianflat.com places. There are many that would fit your needs. They are all lovely and Sophie and Philippe are nice, nice people. When/if you contact her, just tell her what you are looking for..I think she would be most helpful in coming back to you with the availabilities, her thoughts for your group and the prices. I have the rue Dauphine for April with my granddaughter before I move on to a ParisPerfect for myself. Joan

Holger's point is a very good one - especially as you (and I assume the friends also) are from the West Coast and are going to be seriously disoriented as to time for the first couple of days. I often find myself getting up and reading because I can't sleep and it would be great to have a place to do that where others aren't trying to sleep (with whatever degree of success), especially if you have one or two light sleepers in the group.

Annette, All the apartments look nice. The ones from Chez Vous are cute and fresh but I think are a little too small. The one IMO that would give you the most moving around space is Chez Croix, ID 157. The map lay out is really nice and it looks like you can move furniture around if you need to. You have 2 nice size bedrooms and even the couch, I forgot if you were having 4 or 6. But I think you've got plenty of space.. Good luck. We've all heard that you can't please all of the people all of the time. Susan Annette, you can have all the style you want in picking an apartment, you just have to know that your going to pay for it!!!

Gracejoan, We had looked a Pied a terre and did write to them concerning a spring rental but they never got back to us. We looked at ParisVII, 1 Bedroom, almost up in the trees! Also had a terrace! Very contemporary and a lot of space Susan Can someone explain to me how you do that http://tinyurl thing. It takes you right to the sight. How do you know what comes after tinyurl?? Thanks.

Thanks for all the thoughts. Good point about having a place for someone to be during the night if they're unable to sleep and don't want to disturb others. I never have that problem, but I don't know how the others will react to the time difference! I also need to look into the bus routes--thanks Holger! Seems like our priorities are changing a little on a daily basis. All things considered, I think it's going to boil down to this: #1) Immaculately clean #2) Elevator and location best suited for a possible sore knee #3) 2 bedrooms & 1.5 or 2 bathrooms with at least 1 separate WC #4) Not much more than $400 a night, but less would be nice! #5) "Cuteness" (this is the area with a little flexibility--the 4 above are most important. BUT...if it's dog-ugly, it's off the list!) But in the end, we're all pretty easygoing and will be fine with whatever decision is made. I do appreciate hearing the different comments from all of you--it's giving me a different perspective from my own, and will help me head off potential problems.

Susan, When you have a very long url, copy it by right clicking, then go to the website tinyurl.com/, paste your long url into the space. It will be converted into a very short one, copy the new short one , then paste it into the post that you are writing.

You already have your answer to the URL shorten site. A good one to use. You will find it handy.
Re: Ann's search...The Chez Croix #157 is a 2nd floor walk-up. Sometimes you have to really search to find that! Some areas walk-ups are more common.
Re: Pied-a-Terre....a good outfit. The loft one you looked at is very nice. "laidbacks" rented it several years ago. Only problem is that the only bath/toilet is downstairs. Surprised that you did not hear from them. Mail does go awry. Sometimes a follow-up is necessary.
I am finalizing my Spring of 2009 for a month now. Just some small details to work out. Awonderful place, in the perfect location that I was looking for! Excited about it.
With 3 trips in the works, it keeps me busy with the files for all, knowing when the various deposits etc. Checking the airlines for all their changes (Delta is eliminating many flights) and making necessary dining reservations. Doing some of those for April trip now. C'est la vie!!!

I found several apts I liked at Paristay. The only feature I don't like is their pricing system. You have to pay an agency fee and a percentage of the rent seperately. Why can't they just give the total price and let me skip the math!

Paristay has a lot of nice apartments. I just looked at a few and they look nice and new. If they keep building apartments, we'll never know where to stay. Can you imigaine all the agony for some people who have gone to Paris for years and have made friends with owners at other sites. Now, they face questions of being loyal or going for something different and maybe a little less costly? Plus, it will take us ions to make up our minds! Susan
