Hi booked this hotel on rue Saint Andre Des Arts,, anyone familar with it or the area, I mean the area itself looks great to me, but any " eye witnesses" opinion would be much apprieciated. I booked my first week there, then I have two nights with relatives near Chantilly, then the two week tour, then I return to Paris and need 4 more nights.. I have not booked that yet though as I may " treat " us to a nicer hotel( Hotel Eugenie is 130 euros a night) or I may consider staying at a place called" Hot Vieux Remparts" in Provins for two nights. I looks really nice!!( anyone heard of it??)
Anyways, it is so fun to make plans and research, I swear I must plan a trip to Paris at least once every two years just for my mental health!!

Excellent location. You are just a few short blocks from the Seine in one direction and Blvd. SGdeP in the other. Lots of excellent restaurants within a 5 minute walk..Allard, Le Christine, Espadon Bleu, Chez Fernand, Rotis. d'un Face are all very good. Also lots of cafes with sidewalk seating that are very lively.
I'll be interested in hearing about the hotel.

Hello Joan - been awhile.
I checked out the Eugenie Hotel. It is in an area in which I have stayed several times. Excellent location, the price seems right. Please post after you have stayed there. Thanks

I stayed on Place St Andre des Arts on my first trip to Paris (small apartment) and loved the area. I've been back in that area many times since then - you will enjoy it!

On my trip by myself in Feb 2005, I stayed at Hotel Saint-Andre-Des-Arts @ 66, rue S-A-D-A and I loved the area.
There is a small covered passage right across from the hotel that I walked through every day to get the Odeon metro. It is close to the resto Fish. The covered passage has The and a wonderful blank book store and some others. There are many creperiers around the area. (I am reading my notes here.) I found the area to be vibrant and busy with many small school children going to and from their school.
Funny, re-reading my moleskine, that was the trip I visited the UNICEF building and I had to do a lot of begging to be allowed to visit it without a reservation. It has some wonderful art. And the Japanese garden and Fountain of Peace by Isamu Noguchi and "The Nagasaki Angel" were extremely moving! (Sorry to digress here, but this museum is not mentioned too often.) Anyway, back to S-A-D-A- -a wonderful street to stay on!

gg - I stayed there with my two daughters in May 2005 and really enjoyed the area. I agree that the street is interesting and very well located.
Joan - the Eugenie is down the street and Lady Jicky stayed there, I believe in 2005 but we didn't meet because we were there in different months. She has very good comments on the place. You will like the place and location. It's not far from Patrick Roger (chocolate place SisterEurope posted in one of her trip reports) at 108, bd. Saint-Germain. You have to check out his chocolate sculptures. I also have to put a plug on Pierre Herme at 72, rue Bonaparte. You can try my favorite Ispahan (flavors of framboise, rose et litchi). I know you'll have a great time!

Ok, some of you may think I am crazy or cheap( regardless of this issue too, LOL ) but I went on the Hotel Eugenie website today, and found my room now listed at 120 euros per night. So I booked it, and cancelled other reservation. I only saved 50 euros , but hey, thats a good bottle of wine or two nice lunches, so what the heck. Do other people do this, I did it last year at Hotel Regent, so I know it works. You can lose a 5 euro booking fee, but of course you still come out ahead. I guess I have too much time on my hands. LOL

Yes, this is where I stayed in 2005 and my Mum and I shall be there this May too. Then we will cross over to the Marais to the Hotel Sevigne ( never been there before so I cross fingers LOL). Now, the Eugenie is not a pretty girl but what a spot. They were clean in 2005 and so central. This is why I picked it again. We will use the circle buses as it will be easier for Mum to get around and me too for the climbing needed in some metro stations is tiring. It will cost alot more than a book of metro tickets but there will be days we will metro when we are not too tired. We will be there from 20 to 29 May . Joan, when are you going? We will have a week over in the Sevigne after that. Love rue st Andres des Arts! Its noisey but I have stayed over in a apartment near the garnier opera in 2000 and at night it was dull and not so busy so a touch unsafe walking at night. I would rather alot of people around - if you know what I mean.

LAdy, the bus won't cost anymore than the metro, even if you use tickets. Tickets are the same and you can transfer from one line to another , within a certain time frame. Arriving on the 20th , I'd certainly buy a Navigo Decouverte instead of carnets. We've walked all over Paris for many years but now I find the bus the way to go>

Demarais, my french is not that great and I thought of the red /rouge bus tourist line or the L'Open (?) . I know they are WAY more money but my Mother has bad feet some days and I have a heart/lung condition. I coped well in 2005 but I had my husband to lean on in the metro and take some of the impatient pushing people off me. Gosh, Mum and I would just fall on eachother! LOL If I knew All the Metro stops with esculators that could be planned. That is why I picked Eugenie again. In the middle of everything and a easy walk late evening if you want to go and have a light bite or a look around. French TV is not my taste LOL. Thankyou, if Mum's walking is going well though - we might just go the navigo decourverte.

Hi Ladyjicky, I will be staying at the hotel Eugenie July 4-13th. A shame we will miss each other, but of course let them know I am coming, LOL!!!
I would also choose L'Open Tour buses ( which are lime green) as they had more routes.

Ladyjicky - You mentionned on another thread, can't remember which one, that you plan to visit Maxim's Art Nouveau museum, right ? Well, as much as we enjoyed this museum, I must warn you that it is located on 5th or 6th floor of the Maxim's building and we were offered no elevator, I don't think actually that there is one that goes up to the top of the building . Of course stairs there are better than metro ones and there is no rush like in the metro, but since you mention your heart-lungs condition and your mom's walking problems ...

It may just be me but hop on hop off buses seem like a waste of money. They only stop at specific places and you can't get off if you see something interesting. The regular buses go to the same places. You might want to try using this website( in English ) to plan some routes from your hotel. Put in the hotel address, the address of where you want to go or the name, check the bus transport button, then search. www.ratp.info/informer/anglais/index.phpYou can print out the itinerary , or just make a note of it in your notebook or whatever you use for carrying information. You can also get directions for your return journey. Your hotel is very well located for bus routes. We most often uses buses now, rather than the metro. I have a bad knee and Morton's Neuromas in both feet and walking can be a problem if I push it too far. There is a listing of Metro stops with handicap access on the same site. I find too often that the escalators aren't running on the day we want to use them though!

Hi Joan
Did you ever stay here - I am going with Mum and Dad for a couple of nights from July 31 to Sunday the 2nd and we had planned on staying somewhere nice ( Mum not a fan of budget - so by nice read expensive) with the exchange rate from NZD to Euro Dad the banker not so keen ;D
I love this area and this street and wanted to stay in this area anyway so would be interested in how you found it. Dad and I happy to stay in budget and spend big on all the important things like food and wine ! I reckon once I tell Patricia ( Mum ) that she gets more to spend in Bon Marche she will agree too !

Hi Megan,
No, I didn't stay there, I stayed at two other places, Hotel Des Grand Hommes, and Hotel Bernard Paul, or Paul Bernard,, . I did not like the latter. I loved the Hotel Des Grand Hommes though, and if you book early decent rates available.
I did go to the Hotel Eugenie and asked to see a vacant room though.( Excellant location, only a short 1/2 block in from St Michel and Siene) The desk clerk was very nice and gave me keys to two rooms to look at. One was a double and one a triple. Neither had views. Both were very clean and tidy, but not particularily charming. Bathrooms were reasonable size and very clean also. The prices, while reasonable, were more expensive then the other two hotels I booked, so I had cancelled my booking ( and lost the 5 euro booking fee) and rebooked. Would I stay there, yes, it was definately safe, clean, and reasonable,, but, charming, not at all, it did have air conditioning, which is a big thing for me.
I am going to try two new hotels this trip,, ( I am going to be in Paris July 23-Aug4th,) . I like trying new hotels. I have serveral places I have stayed that I really really liked, but I am always looking for a new expereince, or a better deal.. LOL
I am trying the Hotel Place du Louvre, ( in the 1st) and Hotel Diana(5th) this time. I am also considering a two day visit to London inbetween them. ( any good budget suggestions for London,, good location and clean, can be tiny rooms?) .
I did note some very good rates at Hotel Le Regent, which is in an excellant area in 6th,, I stayed there 2 yrs ago and liked it very much, but don't even consider the standard rooms, they are tiny beyond reason.. LOL
PS You have so many trips planed for this year, I am so jealous,, lucky you!
