OK silly question from a cat lover.
How do you say chat?
I know in French you do not say the H at the beginning of a word. i.e Haussmann but what about words with h's within the word?
so is chat (cat) pronounced like the English with the h silent or with the h like in chatroom

Gitte, One of our three is a Chartreaux and while she is 9 years now, when a kitten looked like the all gray chat in the basket but her eyes are more amber colored and her fur a bit darker. the Chartreaux are a very old French Breed, just becoming known here in the U.S.

Yes, the French Chartreux and the British shorthair look much alike, but the British shorthair looks usually more bulky and its fur colour is a lighter gray . Chartreux are great cats, very affectionate with their master, a bit like dogs . I had a Chartreux for 16 years, she died two years ago and I still miss her . Now I have a no-breed cat from the local shelter, she is great but I still sometimes call her the other cat's name ...

Anne - I would so much love to have a British shorthair - and a silver tabby one like the Whiskas kitty. And the bulkier the better - so you can really hug and kiss them. I have seen those kittens in an exhibition. I tell you, I nearly passed out on the floor ! They are the most adorable creatures on earth. My husband does not allow cats, though - so I'll have to wait till I become a merry widow some day. But then I'll move to Paris, of course - and I wouldn't have the heart to confine a cat to an apartment. So I guess there will be not kitty for me.

;D Our Chatreaux gets into poses that are out of paintings. We call her our calendar cat. Increasingly, we find cats from that breed on calendars even though they are rare. They are clearly cats but they are very affectionate as are all our cats. But our Chatreaux actually growls when the door bell rings. Gitte, we live in a house in the city and our cats are indoor cats. It is true that they get lots of exercise running up and down the stairs. But our vet says cats are better of in doors if not in the country. The have perches on the second and third floor so they can sit like voyeurs and watch everyone's business. these can be in front of windows inyour apartment. Of course, you could make a new requirement that you have an apartment with a small garden. Can't recall which apartment site for Paris had one like that with an enclosed small garden large enough for table and chairs and walled. Can't imagine not having cats so I think you are very kind to your husband.

If anyone is interested in owning a cat or two, I have a whole bunch of bi-lingual ones that I can send, and don't worry.......I'll cover the shipping costs. The only problem, though, would be that I might have to find myself a new Mr. Shoesy because the present one adores his "chats". BTW, "chat" was one of the first French words I learned because a "pas de chat" is a very basic ballet step.

Yes Shoesy, Inspiring a very cute, famous T-shirt with a cat in a tutu and toe shoes! I bought one years ago for my sister at the Ballet/Theatre store on Broadway near Lincoln Center. She referred to it as the "cat doing ballet" shirt! Real high brow stuff here!
