Can anyone give me a general idea of how long it takes to get there?
I have been looking at the information about their Christmas displays and it sounds lovely! But since it is a short visit this time, I don't want to do too much traveling outside of Paris. We will definitly be doing Versailles on this trip at my friends request and St.Denis as well, so I am not sure if I want to add another outside of Paris trip or if I should prioritize!
Decisions, decisions...
And I haven't even gotten to the restaurant lists!

Baby Willow, The train ride from Gare de Lyon ia bout half an hour to Melun; then a 6 km taxi ride (there is no shuttle service during the Christmas season which is when you will be there if I remember correctly). It must be really beautilful the "Illumination et Fetes de Noel" from 10:00 to 18:00; Dec. 20-January 4 (closed Christmas and New Year's) and closes at 17:00 hr. on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. Sounds great if you can make time! -framboise

I think it was Annette who started this thread last year. www.ourparisforum.com/index.cgi?board=destinations&action=display&thread=1377Here's a lot of information for you, willow. And I can really recommend the " SEARCH"-function on the top of this page, where the line with the small icons are. Click on the magnifying glass, write your key-word and scroll down to the bottom. "Posted within the last" - I always type: 300 days (to be sure) "Maximum results" - if I suspect that the thing I am looking for may go a way back, I type a large number "View results as" - I always choose "threads collapsed" (move the default set dot), because then you get an easy overview of where the key-word has been discussed.

Gitte you are a research maven!!!
I have done searches before, but I think my problem must have been not changing the the dates for how far back too look!
Thanks for the tip!

Anna, I wouldn't think of St Denis as a trip out of Paris - it's just a Metro ride (not all that long), so doesn't take much to get there, wander around and return to the center of Paris. (And it's well worth the trip, as you will have gathered from other sources!)

I know it's not really a day trip, but it is further than most sites on our list. I have been there once but I want to go back and take a look around the area this time. I am just excited to play tour guide!

I think one of the most fun things to do in Paris it to take others to places you really loved (being careful, of course, not to build it up too much in case they are disappointed . . . . ) You will really enjoy being "tour guide" in part because it will make you really think about (and, of course, remember) the things that stood out for you and why they were important.

If you can go for one of the candle light evenings, it will be special. It is really beautiful.............

The timeframe for my trip won't be during the regular season. I will be there for the Christmas season (Dec.20-Jan.4) so I am thinking I will catch some of light and decorations.

babywillow, as far as I remember, Vaux Le Vicomte offers Christmas events (with lit-up Christmas trees etc.)

I saw that on there website, and my friend positively squealed with joy! She loves Christmasy stuff, so it had to be added to our list.
And now my prettily planned , color coded itinerary has to be re-worked!

LOL you are too funny Willow!
I just want to be the one "negative nelly",, having taken a friend to Paris for her first time, I discovered it is tiring to always be the one who decides everything, and has to do all the translating, and all the finding the metro and bus routes,, basically , just be the " go to " person all the time. At first it was fine, but I think it was day 5 or 6 when I finally snapped at my friend, when once again I said ok what would you like to do today, this or this, and she said .. for the hundreth time " oh , you decide" aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggHHHHHH!
It is fun to be the guide, but sometimes I felt like her whole trip depended on me making all the right decsions.. made me a bit crabby( ok so truth is I have a natural tendency to a certain amount of crabby when I don't get enough " alone" time.. LOL )
