One of my best gal pals here is from Georgia...and yes, she speaks French with a drawl.
But 'rinse' with a Georgia accent is rreence -- and Reims is closer to 'raens'. It's a difficult sound for the anglophone mouth to produce, with the 'swallowed' r and the ae dipthong -- and no one knows why it's pronounced so differently than how it's spelt.

Thanks for the help, Sunshine. However, I have to say I got a good laugh out of your reponse, Geordy. I tried it and liked what I heard, although I am not sure how comfortable I would be actually trying it out on a local. KH

OK, here's a seasonal question for ya'...... It sounds reasonable enough to say: mow-ett-eh-shang-dong with an audible "t". Right ? BUT.......... what if you would just want to scream: "Hey ! Another bottle of Moët and make it snappy !" Would you say: Mow-ayor Mow-ett

It is MOST unladylike to scream Gitte. ;D ;D You wave the empty bottle at the waiter and shout "Encore". Just like you were at the opera.

Here's my take....Moet, alone, would have a silent T. But, once you finish your first bottle, I think you should SNAP YOUR FINGERS when you say "Encore le champagne, immediatement!!" This way, you won't risk making a pronounciation error and you will let those Frenchies know that Madame is to be taken seriously! ;D

When I toured their cellars they pronounced it one syllable..."Moat" like what goes around a castle! ;D I think it has to do with the dots (umlots (ph) (sp)! And they always said the whole thing Moet et Chandon.

...followed almost immediately by a call to a proctologist for assistance in removing the empty champagne bottle from the very uncomfortable place it was placed in response to your snapping your fingers....especially if accompanied by "Garcon!"

Whether followed by Chandon or not, you definetly pronounce m-o-ê-t, with the o and ë rolling quickly because of the double t placed after : forget about the w and make it one single syllabe, as Geordy says.

LOL............ sunshine, you forgot to tell me how to pronounce it ? Perhaps I should just call the caves in Épernay. Been there, as a matter of fact - on 28th of June 2007. AFAIR the perfectly groomed, black-suit dressed, shawl-swishing, petite tourguide said "Mow-ett" - but I am not sure. www.ourparisforum.com/index.cgi?board=reports&action=display&thread=786No, I promise I will not say "garcon". It will more probably be something like "mon petit chou-chou"....... depending on what # bottle I am ordering.

So I DO remember it correctly that it is always "Mo-ett" with an audible "t". Jawohl, Madame la maîtresse, I will try to say it in one syllable only. As a matter of fact, one-syllable words might come in très handy after bottle #whatsit..........

Mow-ay is what we say in France. And if I didn't know how to speak French, I would say "rance" as the name of the city from which it comes.
(It becomes Mow-ett only if you say the full name, Mow-ett ay Shahn-dohn.)

Gitte..I went to the cellars of Mumm's, Moet, Veuve Cliquot, Pommery, and Piper Heidsieck...and all but Piper had the shawl swishing perfectly, elegantly suit attired, pumped, perfectly made-up and coiffed lovely young ladies! Piper had a little train.....and not all of their bottles are turned by hand either!!!

Hmmm......Now I've become curious. Someone has to settle this once and for all before Gitte leaves for Paris ! How do you pronounce that word ? Hey......maybe it's a masculine/feminine thing. Ya know, the guys say "mow-ay" and the girls say "mow-ett" . ;D
