.....on your trips to Paris/France? This query is prompted by a IMO silly piece in this week's Bonjour Paris newsletter....and then they repeated it today..called eat Petite in Paris. Tip # 1 ..bring your own artificial sweetener.....seriously does anyone know anyone who uses them and doesn't always carry their preferred one even if only going out in their hood? I don't add sugar or artificials to anything..but I see folks who do with their packets! Then she suggests allowing one" treat" a week...seriously ..a lot of us are only there a week or so! Okay..sometimes by the end of the trip my waistbands can be a bit confining but nothing serious..all the walking and other activities seem to balance the extra "treats". Oh..and if you indulge in a macaron (I hope she means the large size! ) skip bread with dinner.....there is probably a French ordinance against that! Folks with serious weight issues know what to do/not do on vac/in Paris ..for the rest of us...again silly imo...... So ......weight gainers or non? ;D

I always lose weight. I eat whatever I want, which includes a pain aux raisins and a dessert at dinner pretty much every day, and definitely more wine than I drink at home.
The difference is definitely the walking. Even if I'm staying in a building with an elevator I try to take the stairs.
Couldn't imagine going to Paris and limiting consumption of yogurt, creme fraiche, fromage au lait cru, confit du canard, pain, beurre, the yummy crepes at the Richard Lenoir market, pain aux raisins, saucisson sec, etc....
I bought Wegman's equivalent of saucisson sec last week. Paid 3x the price in Paris. It's nowhere near as good.
I've got to book my next trip!!

Yeah Geordy, I found that article laughable too! I usually lose a few pounds in Paris, despite eating whatever I want. One treat a week, come on!! It's vacation. I could stand to spend 6 months in Paris

I'm with Janetnj - my husband and I both lost weight (or inches) in Paris because of all the walking. What is the point of travelling anywhere if you feel you must deny yourself because you might gain a pound or two? If I said no to bread because I had a macaron (who am I kidding, 3 macarons!) earlier in the day then I would be in need of serious medical attention And Happy Tour De France everyone ;D ;D

On my last trip, I gained a bit..... despite all the walking. Maybe it's 'cause I've gotten older. In any case, I was back to my pre-Paris weight a few days after I returned home.

Pretty funny article - of course I don't watch what I eat in Paris - I do that at home as I try to eat healthful meals - but I'm certainly NOT going to limit myself to all those goodies while in Paris!! For me, that's half the fun of being there!! I eat a lot of pastry and chocolate and always seem to lose a pound or two by the time I return home - it's definitely all the walking that does it for me!

It is always easier now to gain than to lose. Is there a moral in there somewhere?
But oddly in Paris, I do lose and that may be the walking, but also the portion size, the larger meal midday than at night--most of the time AND my own opinion that the food is fresher, fewer or no additives of any kind especially steroids.

I usually add 2-3 pounds (ok,maybe 5 ), but I also have pastries every morning, wine at lunch and dinner , and dessert at least once a day. We do walk 6-8 hours a day, but with the eating and drinking we do over a 14-16 day period, I'm ok with the small weight gain. Paris is worth every single calorie! ;D Jo

I'm with you, Jo! And Shoesy, I've noticed that while in the past I have lost a couple of pounds, now that I'm older I don't, and sometimes, I have come back with a couple more pounds! But then I am able to take them off back home with a more stringent diet and exercise regime. But as everyone notes, we're on vacation! I took off a couple the weeks leading up to Friday's departure, but I found that I couldn't be bothered going crazy beforehand, as I have in the past. I always walk alot there and that seems to hold a major weight gain at bay! This trip I am sharing the city of lights for the first time with my baby sister, and again with my mom, whose 80th b'day we are celebrating! There may be some pounds added on to the three of us by trip's end, but they will be happy pounds, for sure!!

I eat pastries for breakfast when I'm in Paris, and like Jo drink wine at lunch and dinner. I always have multiple courses including dessert and eat lots and lots of cheese. I also always used to lose weight despite such gluttony, until this past January when I think I did gain a few pounds. I can't figure that one out since I walked miles as usual...must be aging...c'est la vie.
But man, if that person is truly writing for the average tourist (and not residents, which would obviously at some point have to have some self-control), then that is mean and crazy advice!!!
