Subtitle: Figs, Leeks and Hamburgers!!!! Well I'm back....it was lovely..just the trip I wanted and needed . Got back Sunday evening....transport issues on both ends.what else is new? on the Paris side RER was not running to CDG for weekend which we did not know.....no signage in Metro.just on those blue screens.like the 3rd message ...not that we were planning on taking it but...made getting taxi difficult . traffic intense. and long lines and backups at airports.....people who took the RER were shuttled to CDG from B lines other teminus. On this end the usual problems asociated with our lousy lack of transport options other than expensive(fare went up this month)cabs! Work yesterday went okay....talking a mile a minute until about noon, then starting to crash! Luckily today is a meeting out of office day..later start. earlier end! ;D The subtitle refers to the abundance of the first two showing up on plates/in dishes...last September it was radishes! Leeks are very under utilized in these parts...delicious! As for the hamburgers.no I did not have but they were every where..and not just one..some menus at small places had a burger section! I can sort of understand Paris.international city = international cuisine and all that but in Quimper? Our first meal...dej..next table 4 young men.looked to be students...all tucking into burgers! Avec ketchup! More to come of course mon amies!

Welcome back, Geordy! ;D I've never had a hamburger in Paris, and I can't imagine ever ordering one there since there will probably be other options that I feel like having. However, I truly LOVE hamburgers and have no qualms about eating them here or in the U.S. As for leeks, I love them!

Welcome home!
I was so hoping your flights would go better this time.
Figs - yum! Can't wait to try them during my October trip.
Look forward to your reports.

Welcome back - sorry you had such lousy flights - mine was 5 hours late out of Chicago and we arrived in Paris 4 1/2 hrs late - that meant I lost most of the first day in Paris - oh well, guess we have to expect some problems - main thing is that you had a great time - too bad you couldn't join us at the Vendange - it was a blast!
Hope you enjoyed a good celebration for your birthday!

My actual flights were okay....though the Delta flight home was rather old fashioned...no back of the seat entertainment and the wine pured from a box....just getting to and from the airport on the return sucked. (well I could also mention the woman sitting next to me, neither American nor French, on the AF flight going, who during the meal service decided she had to use W/C just after i started eating..full tray because we took off late cocktail service and meal were combined so I had a glass of champagne, a wee bottle of wine, had opened covers, etc. I gestured how was I supposed to do this and she said"My husband will hold your tray." Well he didn't look like I wanted him holding my tray! So I somehow managed to slither out. Now the thing is...her menu choice wasn't on the cart, so the attendant said she's be back in a few.if her d%$#ed chicken had been on the cart she would have been chowing down and waited for the loo! And yes I was on the aisle in the middle section , her aforementioned hubby.and son!.were on the other side of her but of course they were eating! ) Arriving in Paris 4 and a half hours late is far worse Sandy!!! Whilst you ladies were vendaging we were TGVing it from Quimper...but the time in Brittany was well worth it! I haven't seen a vendage report? Catching up here..... And soon to bed....jet lag is kicking!

All I could think while reading about the woman interupting your meal on the plane was "Are you FREAKING kidding me?!" That isn't just rude - it's obnoxious . And thanks for the travel tip geordy - i never thought about having a back-up plan in case the RER wasn't operating. I figure if I'm prepared it's less likely to happen

I just typed a whole post about arriving in Paris and first day....lost it! Arrgghhh! So the gist was: Hotel Castex ,,close to Pl. de Bastille ...complimenTARY BOTTLE OF WINE IN ROOM WHICH CAME IN HANDY late Sunday afternoon. Diner in area at Fountaines de Sully...under different ownership/management last couple of years...not as nice...no more raw bar and menu modernized some ..lots of burgers..but had special of leg of lamb..odd side dish serving...seemed like they added everything left.3 kinds of potatoes, haricort vert, peas, carrots all in one pile.tasty though. PD at local cafe next day 6.90 E apiece for cafe, OJ, tartine with butter and apricot confiture and croissant. Exh. @ H de V....about the deportation of Jewish children.only in French....probably a good thing because what I could read was emotional enough. For those of you on your way...an exh on Paris in Hollywood...Audrey Hepburn in Charade as poster child!..was starting the day we left....ahem... Kirs in the sun at Cafe Marly. People watch... Dej @ Brass Lipp..I had read before I left one man saying he ate there every time he was in Paris for the brandade.....what? you mean it was in front of my nose all this time? Hadn't been to Lipp for more than a drink in years...so perused menu in frontand there it was! When I ordered the waiter indicated it could be 15 min or longer wait.I guess since I hadn't ordered a starter....Dude I wait months for this!!! It was great....good presentation, salad in separate bowl, good toasts..Pinot Gris...divine! Shop, window shop... Diner res @ Le Reminet..walk cross river.sit downstairs..still full from brandade...so skip starter again....coeur de boeuf with foie gras on top, plank frites and delicious sauce. We ordered a half bottle of red...also full bottle of white to compliment S/O's dishes and as aperitif..1st choice not available, then second, so offered full bottle of 1st choice red..pay for what you drink fair. I had a good view of fromage buffet from my seat and wanted badly but knew I could not fit it in! Started to rain as we were dining so outdoor diners joined us all downstairs mid meal! Still raining as we left but I had my ever present umbrella so we started walking..stopped halfway cross river!! ***My first endeavor was as usual expansive, full of pithy comments, witty observations, and astounding insights! But what ya gonna do.it is a post!

Aha......so you went to Brasserie Lipp! It gets such a variety of reviews on TA. I've always wondered about that place. Glad you liked your brandade, which I know is a favorite for you. Thanks for having the patience to post twice. (Sorry about the lost post. )

I was hoping to get to that exhibit at Hotel de Ville in July, but we didn't get there. Hopefully we'll see the Hollywood exhibit next month! I love sitting downstairs at Le Reminet too. Have you read some of the reviews on TA where people were offended when they were seated down there and left?! LOL

Sorry Geordy, but I will hijack your thread if I may Your mention of Audrey Hepburn reminded me of a story I told at the wake we had for my wife recently. Sorry, my wife passed away a couple of weeks ago so I have not been paying much attention to the forum. Please, please, don't feel sorry for me. We had finally lost her to dementia a month or two back and her passing was a relief to us all. She went as she had lived, calmly and peacefully, with my eldest son and I at her bedside. Back to Audrey Hepburn. In about 1939 I was living in a small village in Kent and a little refugee girl came to live along the road. I am not sure if it was AH, but she did live in the village for a short time about then. This girl liked to join in our little gang, I was 7 and she about 5. I would tease her by saying "Shut your eyes and open your mouth and I will give you a surprise". Then, being a nasty little boy, I would pop a live snail in her mouth She fell for it more than once, I am ashamed to say. Well, boys will be boys

M sympathy to you Peter - while it is a relief for all concerned, it is still sad to lose one's life partner - please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
