Jody, don't feel bad, I have to figure it out every year too! Now, if we went to Paris more often like someone we know who's name begins with D, it would become second nature to us, wouldn't it!

Jody, your question made me think of one of my own:
When I arrive in Paris with my American cell phone, I have to call the owner of my apartment. How do I dial a local number?

Happy, just like if you were dialing from the US:
+33 1 xx xx xx xx
the first number disappears.
You get the + by holding down the 0 (zero) key for a few seconds - the + will appear on the screen.
(Annette, I think you'll find that 001 access the international lines -- then 33, then the number:
001 33 1 43 54 62 40)

Okay then, if the number is 06 24 36 77 90, I drop the 0 of the 06, right? + 33 6 24 36 77 90 (I can see your eyes rolling, Sunshine )

Yes Happy, always drop the 0 when calling from abroad or else from France using a foreign phone, and that's even when you're calling a mobile (numbers which begin with 06 are always mobiles')

Nah, I'd have texted you to figure out where the heck you were, and you could have just hit 'reply'.

Oops! Yeah, I got it wrong. Completely! That's what I get for answering difficult questions first thing in the morning Anyway, the international code from the US to France is 011 (not 001, that's calling from France to the US). And yes, it goes first, then the 33, then drop the 0 and dial the rest: 011 33 1 43 54 62 40 Maybe between us all we'll get it right eventually!

So if I'm calling the US from my Paris apt phone which has free calls to 487 countries, I dial 001 252 635 1452? Just call me internationally challenged, it's OK, I can take it.

Why do they bother with the first 0 if you never use it?? UK is the same way!!

Because we have to use the 0 internally, as do the French in France. It's just a quirk of the telecoms system

Same thing here in Israel. Every area code begins with a 0, but it gets dropped if someone dials Israel from another country.

Thanks, Annette! Now bear with this dummy for another minute, please. If I'm in Paris, using my US iPhone, and want to call the US # above, what do I do? If this has been answered, just ignore me.

Wow, I really have to wrack my brain for this one, Darcy! <scratching head> I *think* I just hit the number in my iPhone contact list and didn't have to add any international calling numbers. I can't remember...it's been over a month! lol
