SFO - theres a place called Gaylord Suites. Its about 3 blocks from Union Square, so its pretty central. Its more like an apart-hotel. But it was clean, basic - a good place to just sleep - not hang. My husband stayed there for a conference - the friend he recommended it to got a way better room with a sitting area, so luck of the draw. We actually bumped into a few aussies staying there as well, who thought it was a real bargain!

NYC - Cosmopolitan - its way downtown in Tribeca - u can walk to WTC. But it has 2 different subway lines (A,C & 1,2,3) on either side of the street. This is a little bit grungier than SFO digs, the rooms are smaller, but it was well located & by the time we got home, we just needed a bed to crash on. There is a starbucks right next door, but also some restaurants across the road. I think it may have Bouley and the less expensive Bouley Upstairs - which we thought was fantastic, and there is also the Bouley bakery. I just looked at their website - looks like they have upgraded, big time - looks way better than it was back in 2006.

I went to NYC last Feb & stayed at Millenium at times square - just check a sometimes they have specials. I think I got a room for like $160/night but there were 2 of us & we were in a corner room on the 52nd floor with view of Empire state & the times square lights. It was actually a great location. We could walk to broadway to see a show, pretty much hardly used the subway. its the first time I'd stayed in a 4-5* hotel!

We are not luxury travellers, pretty much just a step up from backpackers - but if you are not going to spend much time in the room...
