I'm late this year in making reservations for my upcoming trip but I'm searching for some good choices for meals that won't be a few hundred euros for two people . My one big splurge this time will be L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon. I really enjoy that place so much. I'm also planning on La Régalade and Fontaine de Mars and maybe Paul Bert. Can anyone give me any other suggestions for favorite places? There is a possiblility that I'll be alone for several of these meals so I'd like places that would be comfortable for that too. Sorry if this is a subject that has been covered in the past!

My absolute favorite restaurant for lunch or dinner is Josephine, Chez Dumonet. It fits my criteria of moderate although they do not have a prix fixe.

Terrie, I have a reservation at paul Bert for the 7th with Darcy( BettyAnn). You are welcome to join us if you like.
Have you been to Le Pamphlet in the 4th . It's one of my favorites. We also took Gitte's recommendation and had dinner last year at Le Cordonnerie on rue St Roch. It was excellent . We had 2 Josephine Chez Dumont, Pre Verre, Perraudin, Itineraries, Bistro de Peintre, , Royal Turenne. Another friend highly recommended Le Guirlande de Paris on the Pl. de Vosges.

I love Josephine Chez Dumonet too. Such a fun place and the food is great. I haven't been to any of the others you mentioned so I will add them to my list. Thank you!! Thanks for the invitation to Paul Bert too. It's the one night I do have booked already for Joel Robuchon so I won't be able to join you but I will see you the next night.

We really like Au Vieux Comptoir, a wine bar/restaurant in the 1st. We went twice last May and plan to return during this trip. I'd like to try Josephine CHez Dumonet also this time, but I fear I've already overload us with reservations and more expensive places than usual, so we'll see (this is maybe where those refund euros may come in handy!)

Another vote for Josephine Chez Dumonet. We also really like A La Biche au Bois in the 12th, especially in the fall. La Regalde is our favorite - I can't wait to try the new one! And Chez L'Ami Jean in the 7th never disappoints. This past May I went to L'Aromatik in the 9th...a little more non-traditional than the others, but it was really good, and a real value. Of course I could give you about 100 others off my list, and that would just be a start!

My next place to go is Paul Chêne - an old-school classic French restaurant. www.paulchene.com/index.php Everybody in TA raves about it - so I will hurry and go there for a dinner in October, before it becomes too tourist-hyped ! www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187147-d719817-Reviews-Paul_Chene-Paris_Ile_de_France.htmlAgree about "gotta-try" the New La Régalade in Rue St. Honoré. Just hope that they haven't taken that cranky Madame with them from the 14th arr. lebestofparis.com/restaurants/la-regalade-saint-honoremegzimbeck.com/2010/04/la-regalade-saint-honore/Walked by the "old" La Régalade earlier this month and it looked VERY much closed down ? Also went to La Fontaine de Mars and although still good, it's overpriced, IMO. I paid over 40 euros for the Sole Meunière (which is, I admit it, what that fish costs in Paris, for some peculiar reason ?) - but the presentation was certainly not worth 40 euros: just a dollop of purée de pommes de terre, half a lemon and a twig of parsley...... I also recommend Le Chardenoux, which is just around the corner from Bistrot Paul Bert in the 11th arr. Lovely turn-of-the-century bistrot, with frosted glass, stucco, paintings on the ceiling, brass lamps etc. Beautiful settings for some very good food ! www.restaurantlechardenoux.com/

Also I like (on Lilia's recommendation) Chez René in the east end of Boulevard Saint-Germain (at #14, almost where it runs out in the Seine): cheerful elderly waiters in black aprons, white shirts and bowties, beautifully laid table, with crisp white tablecloths, fabulous wines and rock-solid old fashioned French cooking. Absolute No-Foam Guarantee !!! Had the most perfectly pink-fried noisettes d'agneau with an unbelievable sauce - and for dessert: a millefeuille the size of a pickup truck !

Gitte,
That is funny. Paul Chene was on our list for the aborted trip. It apparently serves goose confit, Will look forward to your report.
Once we get all the cancellations settled, etc. We will start planning for next September-October (2011) and hope for no more mishaps.
Have fun all.

Dear holger - I am very sorry for you, with the cancellation and all. You had planned for this trip for a full year or more. It can't be helped, sometimes life just takes a sharp bend and we are not asked if it's a good time. I will stuff myself chez Paul Chêne, trust me - and take lots of pictures.

Funny, I just found a card from Chez Rene in my travel purse. I don't recall eating there but must have liked the looks , so picked up a card. We'll give it a try!

I've been curious about Chez Rene too-just a hop, skip and a jump from our place. And for what it's worth, they were voted as having the best chocolate mousse in Paris, although that pick up sized millefuille sounds tempting! LOL

I'm making a great list here. Thanks! btw, I don't know how anyone else's french is, (mine is just passable) but does anyone else have a problem with the menu at Chez L'Ami Jean? I love that place but find the menu daunting!

Jody, you know..... I am not really sure. I happened to stumble over this place by good fortune in September 2007 with my Mother and her friend Kirsten. That was long before it became a TripAdvisor Darling. And I have been going to dine in Hugo's kitchen ever since, especially since my Mother passed away in 2008. And it has been my special "home" in Paris.
However, now that it has become the HIPPEST Paris restaurant on TripAdvisor, even outranking Guy Savoy and Le Taillevent, I am not so sure. A great part of the charm would be sitting in the kitchen, chatting with Hugo as he was cooking - but now when the place is jampacked all the time, the poor man will be so busy that he just has to focus on cooking and nothing else.
I also read somewhere in TA that he had his wife and son come in to serve at tables, what happened to my schmoochable Kad ? If Kad is no longer there, it's not the same.
I will walk by to see how things are going, hopefully it is still quieter at lunchtime, but not sure yet. The best thing for you to do is just call Hugo at +33 (0)1 42 60 17 42. He is fairly good at English, so you'll be fine.

Kad better be there. We had such fun with hime last year. He was showing all of us his kid's pictures and was so proud. I'm glad for Hugo's purse but would be unhappy if it has changed!

Another cheer for Chez Rene! Lilia and I were there different nights the same trip a couple of yrs. back. I haven't had the Chocolat Mousse because I was too stuffed for dessert owing to mostly my mouth watering, luscious, cheesy, gooey wonderful ravioli starter!!! Next time I'm having the starter the woman next to me had as a main course a fois gras, pasta gratin that looked equally wonderful....and the mousse!

...and for dessert: a millefeuille the size of a pickup truck ! Oh well, now this is news worth knowing about. I must say that you all put me to shame with your restaurant adventures. My typical mode of travel does not lend itself to a lot of restaurant meals but I am determined to do better on my next trip.
