Thanks FMT. The island near Carnac sounds fine. If you do get to the Orkneys, along with the megaliths and Cairns, you must visit Skara Brae.
I am assuming you have visited the Upper Paleolithic Caves in the South of France. If not shift back in time from the Neolithic to these caves. We did these in 2007 and loved them and there were many great places to eat with reasonable driving. But try to go soon as gradually many if not most will be closed to the public to preserve the paintings and carvings.

holger - I have so far only been to Lascaux II. All the biggies in the south are on my list though. My friend at The Smithsonian says he'll get me into the original Lascaux if he ever comes over to visit. I don't know about Skara Brae but now I'm curious so I'll have to start googling. The Great Cairn is a must see if you can do the drive from Carnac. The whole are near Carnac is loaded with sites and just using the Michelin map you'll find lots of great stuff. Below is a link about an area just east of Vannes so it's near Carnac and only 2 of these are marked on the Michelin map. landes-de-cojoux.com/index2.htmNormandy has fewer of these features but I've got a couple links for stuff there if you'd like. Glad to make acquaintance with another person who shares my interest in prehistory, and of course, good food and wine.

mossie - Well, it's not out of the realm of possibility. But I think it would take some serious etymological research to prove it.
