I guess it's all a matter of priorities, Shoesy...when we travel, we tend to set aside enough money for one really good meal per day, and the rest of the time we're very frugal. I just need to 1) win the lottery so I can get my plane ticket to Paris today and 2) convince my boss that I need an extra couple of weeks vacation.
But back to the thread...I don't remember hearing/reading about Les Ombres. Can anyone enlighten me??

Les Ombres is the spectacularly-situated restaurant atop the Quai Branly museum. lesombresrestaurant.com/I agree about food as a priority. It's one big reason for traveling (living ;D), as far as I'm concerned.

OH, Ok! I do remember reading various reviews of that one, just didn't remember the name. Gosh RobertZ, don't you just love the restaurant dilemma? SO many to choose from...so little time!

I spend far too much time figuring it out.

Shoesy, No, my mother has not said "I want to try haute cuisine" but I know her well and I know she would think she had died and gone to heaven. She wouldn't ever take herself to a place like that. ANd my father, when he was living, was tight with his cash...I think that living for 75 years calls for a great meal.... And no, I am not wealthy. Not at all. But in the grand scheme of things, a 100 euro meal is a heck of a lot more affordable than a 250 euro meal. That is what I meant by "more affordable". Why am I feeling the need to explain myself so much??

Les, maybe something with more old-fashioned elegance would be fitting. L'Elysée du Vernet is a favorite of Luc's and I trust his taste implicitly. Another possibility--not for the food, necessarily--but for an absolutely incomparable environment is Le Train Bleu. I'm sure you've been there. If your mom isn't a real foody, maybe the "over-the-top" ambience could be more of an attraction than the perfectly mi-cuit slab of foie gras with truffle shavings and pink peppercorn-champagne vinaigrette. By the way, I totally made up that last dish, but it does sound rather tasty, doesn't it?

les - Whatever you choose will be greatly appreciated by your mom. She'll love the meal, Paris and you. (Well........ she already loves you, of course.)

Le train bleu is on my short list...I will give it a bit more consideration. I'm trying to stay away from really modern interiors, etc. She would get all intimidated by sleek-ness.
And that's a nice idea for the other place Truffaut. I will check it out.
Merci beauuuuucoup.

The Vernet is closed on Saturdays (I'm looking for a Sat. night), and I can't find a web site for Le Train Bleu...
Does anyone know if they have one? I've never used it but wanted to refresh my memory on the menu...

Le Train Bleu's website seems to have died. It was there a couple of weeks ago at www.le-train-bleu.com/. Senderens and Guy Savoy: coat and tie, I assume?

Senderens would need a coat/tie at night. The lunch crowd is mostly business types, ladies taking a break from serious shopping, and media types. Well-dressed is required, but there's considerably more flexibility in the coat/tie routine.

Les, what about 1728? I've never been, but it certainly seems to have the proper mom atmosphere.

Senderens would need a coat/tie at night. I assumed so. I don't mind getting dressed up. Thanks.

Yeah, 1728 is another option. Is the food good there? I'm really not familiar w/ it. Its web site makes it look like a musty museum...
Thanks for the train bleu link!

Its web site makes it look like a musty museum... My impression, which is nothing more than that, is that it's solid, but not inventive, cooking, and that the room(s) is (are) just lovely. I have to agree with the way the web page looks, though. Rather Addams Family, isn't it?
