What a wonderful and informative bunch you are. Unfortunately I was out yesterday evening and so have only just read your replies and feel so much better now. At 8 am I sent my email apologising for my cancellation and asking for a refund of the bulk of my deposit. I paid with my credit card through PayPal so I will telephone the credit card company and inform them that there may possibly be a problem. I will now have a look at the Agencies and accommodation suggested above and try to find something for my dates and within my budget (decisions, decisions - why it all so confusing?!?). I will keep you informed and no doubt be back with some other questions. Thank you all so much and especially to denise for her well-balanced review.
Truffaut - your apartment looks amazing. How I wish it was vacant for my dates. I see I will have to make a return visit in the not too distant future!

Just FYI, I stayed in the 3 bedroom Ledru Rollin apartment (Centreparis) mentioned earlier on this thread. We stayed there at the end of November, 2008. At that time, WIFI was not available in this apt. Just FYI.
If you want any further details on the apt., please don't hesitate to ask. There were many positives, but also a few negatives.

Just to report back to update the situation. I have cancelled my booking, mainly due to worry about the stairs. The owner has very kindly and quickly refunded my deposit through PayPal so I am very grateful. Unfortunately, I am new to using PayPal so I did not realise that we should have done it through them as a 'Refund' rather than raising another 'Payment Request' so I am now about £50 out of pocket but it could have been much worse. [Actually, worse has happened to me today - I was running late this morning for a visit to the doctors, so I did not clear the mounds of snow thoroughly enough. I ended up partly demolishing my wall at the front of the house! Thankfully, and goodness knows how, but my car does not seem to be too badly damaged. Needless to say when my BP was taken at the doctors, it was sky high.]
The owner of the Git le Coeur appartment is planning a major renovation during the period 16 February to 30 March 2009. She looks at this site and has said that she will upload new photographs when it is completed to give us an update.
Again thanks for your suggestions and support - I will let you know which apartment I rent and will, of course, give an update on my return. Meanwhile, I will enjoy reading and benefitting from all the advice and ideas on this site and contribute if possible. My last proper visits to Paris was in the 1980's, although I have passed through but not stayed on a few occasions since. I look forward to falling in love with it all over again. My 17 year old son is adamant that he wants to study in the US but who knows, once he has seen the Sorbonne .......

:)Yes it is nice to know that my review has helped someone and also that the owner is planning major renovations. It sort of validates my review. I thought long and hard before posting this review because the owner seemed a nice lady and my dealings with her were good The apartment was not all bad and so I tried to give a objective, balanced view and back it up with photos. It will be interesting to see the "after" photos, because this could be a great apartment with some upgrading. Fiona I will look forward to your review of your "new" apartment in due course. Hope you and your family have a good trip. Denise love from england

Denise, I just saw this thread,, and I must exalt you for such a thorough and fair report, I like that you listed good and bad( and it is obvious the bad outweighed the good) , and your pictures really show us exactly what you mean( that toilet rooms looks like a knee banger for sure,, and the mold and nasty fittings,, yuck. I liked the photos since I have read reviews where sometimes I just wonder if someone is being very picky,, some things don't bother me, like when you said "chipped counters" I was like , " oh well" ,, but when I saw the pictures I totally got what you meant( they looked nasty,, and I imagine bacteria would linger in all those cracks,, in fact , it reminded me of the inside of some wilderness cabins we have rented,, but hello, this is PARIS! LOL
Thanks

:)Hello Matrixkape.
To be fair to the owner, I have modified my review to say the apartment has been renovated.
However I was the subject of some rather unpleasant posts on TA several months after my review appeared, so I hope this is not the start of a similar campaign.
Have you stayed in the apartment? if so I would be interested in your view of the renovations as I see some of the original fixtures and fittings are still there.
Denise.
Love from England

I have received an email from the owner of this apartment asking for this review and photos to be removed. They have provided additional photographs of the newly-renovated apartment. Clearly, the bathroom is much improved. I do not feel comfortable, at this point, removing this review, since the owner at some point felt it was appropriate to rent out such a clearly substandard apartment. However, I do encourage potential renters to carefully review the apartment's website and make up their minds for themselves. The link is www.vrbo.com/37031.
