Parsnips can be a dieter's biggest ally. Boiled and puréed, they thicken soups so they taste quite creamy, without adding any cream.
I've never had rutabagas. What do they taste like?

To me rutabaga has a nutty, earthy flavor. If you like sweeter veggies, cook an few carrots to mash into the rutabaga.
I make a wonderful rutabaga bisque with bourbon.

Thanks, Anne - if I would have been half way smart, I would have checked Google translate before I posted the question!!
Ellen, I'm going to try the carrots and parsnips - sounds good! Another good combination is potatoes and rutabagas boiled together then mashed and add butter - very tasty. I use three times potatoes to rutabagas and start the rutabagas boiling first as it takes them longer to cook.

I thought cooking and eating swedes was called cannibalism Actually mashed swede is very acceptable and quite sweet. Can of course, like all vegetables, be eaten raw. We used to as kids when we scrumped them from the fields. And the dish is "toad in THE hole", excellent with a properly cooked Yorkshire pud.

Swedes, (or turnip ) as we call them here, were a life saver to many in famine times here in Ireland. I actually hated them until my dh persuaded me to try them mashed with butter, quite nice actually. Oooh! Mossie why did you mention Yorkshire pud?, I'm longing for some now. I remember when I was little my nan used to make the most delicious onion gravy and pour it inside her gigantic Yorkshires. Then again that was in Yorkshire, I can't get the mine right when I try , though my sons say there ok . I get an awful ribbing off my dh as he says I'm from Yorkshire it should be in the genes, I did come to Ireland when I was 8 .
