Anyone actually been to a ballet there (Shoesy my lamb, I can see that like me, you want to go). What did you see? Was it good? Are all seats full view? (at the ROH in London, some are restricted owing to the shape of the auditorium).

Me! Me! Me! I saw La Dame aux Camelias there on the 9th of July and it was wonderful. All seats are not full view, you can get a pretty good idea by looking at the seating plan on their website. Unlike the ROH, this site automatically assigns you the best available seats within the price you select, which is great because you don't have to figure it out. They also let you see, before you buy, exactly what view you'll have of the stage. So far this is the only site I've seen which doesn't make you choose your seats - with the risk that you may pick the wrong ones, the ROH, the Teatro dell'Opera and the theatre at the Caracalla Baths in Rome all make you pick. Another great thing about Opera Garnier is that they send you the tickets (in Europe anyway, not sure about the rest of the world) so you don't have to worry about getting to the theatre early to collect them. They also sent me an email on the 6th to remind me that we had seats :-) It's a lovely experience and you should try to go. Lucky, lucky you, anyway, being able to go to the ROH whenever you want to.

I'm deffo going to a ballet on my next trip. so now I have to arrange a trip around a ballet I want to see.
Go to the ROH whenever I want? Oh I WISH. I get there twice a year, maximum. The best tickets for a ballet are now about £95, and the cheap tickets aren't worth having.
What I really really need is a rich husband.

I saw the ballet, Caligula, at Opera Garnier. Very interesting!
We had cheap seats so couldn't see the far left of the stage but I went to see the building more than the ballet (sorry Shoesy!), so I was happy.
I really want to take a tour of the bldg in Nov.

Dear Darcy - You needn't apologize. I too am infatuated with the building, and I think everyone should see it whether they're interested in seeing a performance there or not. BTW, as much as I would like to see a ballet there, I've accepted the fact that I never will because my dear hubby has no interest in my favorite art, and I have no intentions in going our separate ways while we are in Paris together.

"Go to the ROH whenever I want? Oh I WISH. I get there twice a year, maximum. The best tickets for a ballet are now about £95, and the cheap tickets aren't worth having." Well, actually, you have a point, we paid 90 each for seats in the orchestra stalls in April, so it's not something you can do every day, but you could, for example, splurge for a special occasion without having to worry about scheduling biometrics appointments etc (This is something I love about France, if you have your permis de sejour you're OK, lots of European countries insist on a visa anyway.) We had a gorgeous experience at the ROH because we also had dinner at the Crush Room, the courses being served during the intervals of the ballet. It was great fun and I highly recommend it. Shoesy, my husband isn't very keen on ballet either, but we worked out a deal, I agreed to attend an organ recital the next time there's something he wants to hear (I hate the sound of the organ for more than 5 minutes so it's a big concession), and in the end he really enjoyed the ballet.

afds - Unfortunately, that type of deal would never work for me because my DH likes basketball and soccer. No way would I go to a game! Yuck, yuck, yuck.....!!!

Shoesy, you might be surprised by basketball - it's actually a lot of fun, even for those of us who aren't die-hard sports fans.

Ok, my friend and I decided to see the ballet during our winter trip. We were trying to get tickets for the NYE show but they had no seats next to each other available so we are seeing it the night before. We are VERY excited!

I have sat in various sections of the Opera Garnier for ballet, and some seats are definitely better than others. I got very inexpensive tickets one time high in the Amphiteatre section, and the seats were extremely uncomfortable- high, shallow, and cramped. Next time I sat in the Orchestre, which was fine. Last year I saw Caligula from the first Loge on the side. I was in the first row, but even so, when the people next to me leaned forward they blocked a good part of the stage. Of course they had to lean forward because they couldn't see when the people next to them leaned forward; it was a domino effect. The people in the row behind me had to stand or they couldn't see at all.
I thought Caligula was interesting too, but not necessarily in a good way. Glad I went but the mixed reviews warned me.
This year I have tickets to see Les Enfants du Paradis. I rented the movie and have watched it, as well as its extremely interesting commentary, in preparation. Really looking forward to it.
They do send tickets to the US, by the way.

I'm considering buying tickets for La fille mal gardee (and then talking DH into the trip and I need some seating advice here. The best available seats on the likely dates I have are either orchestre (nos. 130-something), or balcon, or loge de face. Last time we had orchestre, 400-something, and they were OK but not great. The price for all these options is the same, which would be the best view? Help, please, before the tickets disappear! Merci beaucoup.

Hard to say....in any of the boxes it depends on your location...the front row , places 1&2 are fine, the middle can be tricky, and the back5&6 at least you can stand if the other rows' heads are in your way! And it all depends how close to center.

Is 'balcon' boxes? I thought those were loge? The view is good, right in the centre, but the seat numbers are 107 and 108, no way of telling whether they're first or second row

Perhaps I have the answer. From a post on fodor's: "If you are considering purchasing seats for a performance, note that the orchestra seats are much more comfortable than the balcony. I have had tickets in both locations, and the seats in the balcony were extremely uncomfortable, no leg room, shallow seats, while the orchestra seats were similar to those in American theaters. Of course they cost much more also."
The cost is the same, but I think I'll go with the orchestre.

Yes the boxes are loge. The upper balconies are very, very uncomfortable but they would not cost the same as orchestra seats.
Good luck!

Ta-daa!!!! I have my tickets, I have my tickets And I have my hotel, the Mansart on Rue des Capucines. Only two days this time, but I'm determined to get into Notre Dame, this will be the third attempt! It's so weird, I had no intention of going to Paris this year (yeah, right ) and suddenly my computer starts showing me the Garnier calendar...spooky, isn't it? ;D
