In another thread, Laidback recommended a particular bus route for me, then Truffaut cautioned that it may operate a shortened schedule on weekends and might not be a dependable means of transportation. In an attempt to sort out the confusion this set off in my poor head, I came across the following tidbit that I thought I'd share: "Most buses, whose numbers are indicated at stops by black numbers on a white circle, run every day of the year from about 5h30-0h30. Buses whose emblem is a white number on a black circle generally run only from about 6h00-20h30 Monday through Saturday except holidays.
When the number on the front of the bus has a slash through it, the bus runs through only half of the route. This short range service usually happens only at rush hours and on certain routes."Armed with the information to decipher the code, I think I'll be able to more confidently depend on the buses!

Thanks Annette, that is something you taught me today! An exalt is on the way All of the schedules and routes are listed in Le petit parisian 3 Plans par arrondissement which is imho the best of the plans de Paris. For example the #85 bus we were discussing runs a normal schedule on Saturdays but on Sunday and holidays it only runs from the city hall of St. Ouen to the city hall of the 18 arrondissement, which means you will have to catch another bus or metro to and from the 18th if you wish to visit the puce on Sunday.

LB, does your Le Petit Parisian 3 Plans par Arrondissement show these schedules? I'll have to give that another look--I think that's what I had on my list to buy last year in Paris, but after looking at a bunch of them at a newsstand, I ended up with the Paris Practique par Arrondissement instead. All it has is a small bus route map in the back, but it's not overlaid on a street map, so not real handy for me.

Yes it does, although it takes a little getting used to; the overall bus map covers 2 pages side by side so that it is fairly readable and the schedules for each line are on these 2 pages: dimanche et fĂȘtes, soirĂ©es and Noctilien. I have been using this booklet for years and just this Spring got the revised version, and thanks to MaisonMetz I am still finding features of which I was unaware.
