French films are playing at our favorite arty movie theater in Baltimore this weekend!
One is this:
ROMAN DE GARE
2007, France. Dir: Claude Lelouch. Dominique Pinon, Fanny Ardant, Audrey Dana, Michèle Bernier, Myriam Boyer, Zinedine Soualem, Boris Ventura Diaz, Marc Rioufol, Thomas Le Douarec. 105 min. Rated R. In French with English subtitles.
In the still of the night, three lives are about to cross…a woman abandoned, a stranger awaiting his chance and a best-selling author who imagines the thriller of the year. Deceptively layered and intriguingly misleading, this highly anticipated new feature from writer/director Claude Lelouch (Oscar winner for A Man and a Woman) stars Dominique Pinon and Fanny Ardant as an unlikely couple caught up in a game with high stakes—and deadly consequences
The other is Audrey Tautou's latest:
PRICELESS
2006, France. Dir: Pierre Salvadori. Gad Elmaleh, Audrey Tautou, Marie-Christine Adam, Vernon Dobtcheff, Jacques Spiesser, Annelise Hesme. 105 min. Rated PG-13. In French with English subtitles.
Jean (Gad Elmaleh), a shy young bartender, is mistaken for a millionaire by a beautiful seductress named Irene (Audrey Tautou, Amélie). When Irene discovers his true identity, she abandons him, only to find that a love-struck Jean has no intention of letting her get away. Jean's comical attempts to gain her affections gradually evolve into setting himself up as a gigolo at a luxury hotel, until Irene finally starts to warm to her persistent, persuasive suitor.
Has anyone seen either? I think it might be an omen that we should a) get our trip to Paris nailed down soon and b) go to the movies this weekend!
