Okay, I had about decided to book the Hotel Claude and cancel the Beaubourg. However, when I began to do the actual reservation (the next step past where I'd gone before), it turns out the double room is 18 euros MORE per night, not 12 euros less. Since we've never stayed in the Marais before, and already have the Beaubourg one booked, I decided to just stick with that. I'm sure we'll love that part of Paris too.
Like Joan said, as long as our pillows are in Paris... ;D

Well I am just updating this thread. My daughter and I stayed at the Hotel Claude Bernard for 5 days at the beginning of July.
Pros
Location was good, but on a busy sometimes noisey street. Bakery across street, and little cafe, and within minutes walking to Cluny , Boulevard St Michel, and many other sites. Rooms were very clean( although you will see some peeling paint) and well put together. Staff were friendly.
Cons
First room they gave us was a double, we had booked a twin. They moved us after the first night. Double room was really tiny( and I am familar with small rooms in Paris) Twin room was pretty and larger,, but the NOISE was an ongoing issue. We could hear people keyboarding in the computer room across and down the hall. We heard bathroom noises from neighboring room, and I do not like that,, LOL Mini fridge did not work, and although they always said they woudl come tomorrow to fix it, no one ever came, and it never got fixed. It did not function at all.
I guess the noise was the worst. Night desk clerk smoked, so he had to stand outside front door and smoke, directly below our window. I kept window closed ( a/c) so it wasn't the smoke that annoyed me, but he had friends who would visit at night and they would all stand out there and socailize,, and twice groups of young partiers came down the street around 12:30 very lcud and drunk, and he would chat with them too!!!!
Our first room was tiny, but, it faced an inner courtyard so was quieter, something to keep in mind. On this trip we also stayed at two other hotels, and at one our room faced Boulevard Montparness,, and guess what, once the windows closed it was like the wall of silence, so the QUALITY of windows makes a big difference.

Also want to add, although I did not stay there , I did walk over to Hotel Eugenie and ask to see a room, which the desk clerk was very nice about letting me do..
I would consider staying there. the room was nice, clean, and small, but not too small. Location was EXCELLANT,, just 1/2 block up the Rue Des Arts past the fountain at Boulevard St Michel( I think I botched that description, just trust me, LOL , it is convenient) . We peeked in two rooms ,both faced inner courtyard and were quiet, one was a double and one a triple.

Interesting that the Claude Bernard discussion has come around again after 3 or 4 years.
I stayed there for a week in 2004 and 2005. Both times I stayed in the same room on the 5th floor. Of course the elevator is small, this is Paris. The room was clean, the views from the balcony were breathtaking. Breakfast was O.K.
What made the experience was the Manager, Mahammed !
The location of the hotel was ideal for exploring the 5th and 6th.
Best Wishes,
Randy Silver

Joan - I'm sorry to hear about your noisy experience at the Claude Bernard. We stayed there last November and had a nice time. Of course, in November, it is rather quieter than July - the night clerk does not go outside to smoke and socialize. Muhammad and Mahmoud manage on different days. For several days, I thought they were one person until one day, I noticed one is slightly cross-eyed (noticeable only if you stare but that is rude, right?). My husband thought I was losing it. And Kingsley did a wonderful job cleaning our room everyday!
Yes, Randy (where have you been lately?), you are right, the management helped. Our room was on the top - had to take the stairs from the 5th floor. I only took the elevator going up anyway especially at the end of the day.
I am staying at the Minerve down the street in September. RDB (Parisbound) said this is her favorite hotel in Paris.

Well one thing is that the no smoking inside thing is new since January. Of course it would have never been an issue before. Also during day there was construction in restaurant ( ?) next door( this looks like part of hotel , but I am not sure.
I have heard the Minerve is nice, and as I said before, the area is so convenient , we enjoyed that very much.
PS Now that I recall ,, our room number was #13 LOL, right at top of first flight of stairs( we never took elevator since we were so close, except for first night on 5th)
