The books and some brochures and we are both excited. But so many places to see!!I'm going to need some help with an itinerary. We'll have 9 or 10 days and would like to stay in 2 or 3 differrent places and travel out by car each day . So far the plan is Fly into Paris for 2 days Train to to pick up car, then on to our first stop, for 3-4 nights 1 or 2 more places and make day trips by car. Drop off car and train back to Paris for a week Middle of October to November is the most likely time for us. HELP!!!

Hi demarais,
We flew to Paris, stayed there several days and took the train south to Bordeaux where we rented a car. Drove east for about 160 miles. Once in Perigord things are fairly close. Sarlat might be one place to stay and do day trips. We truly enjoyed them all - Les Eyzies, Domme, Rocomadour, Caves at Lascaux, Brantome, Cordes, Perigueux. Do hurry, just enjoy.

Jody, that's a perfect time for the Dordogne (mushroom season!!). Take the train either to Brive or to Perigueux (Brive may be more convenient) and rent a car there. I would suggest getting a gite (you can shop in the markets for the surrounding villages, and get some of the best produce you will ever eat) and then doing various driving loops. Hopefully, one of the guidebooks you got has driving trips (if not, look for one - we had one last May, and did a couple of back road trips that were really great).
There are some really wonderful places to base (or you could get a gite for 6 or 7 days, and stay in a hotel or two the other days just to be based in different areas).

I think Brive is an excellent place to pick up a car. We left Paris from Gare Austerlitz, direct to Brive, car rental places are less than a block from the Brive station and from there it's not far to your first destination, wherever that may be.

Jody, I was packing up some books and came across the guidebook I liked best for the Dordogne - "Drive Around Dordogne and Southwest France." It has a number of driving loops that are off the beaten track, so you probably would want to combine that with the really popular tourist sites. We used it for a loop that included Brantome, in the western part of the Dordogne over past Perigueux.

As much as I love Paris, the Dordogne is where my heart lives. We hope beyond hope to retire there when the time comes. As we came over the last hill after Limoges that brings you into the Dordogne several years ago, hubby gave my hand a squeeze and softly said "We're home." And that's how it feels.
We always stay in gites, so my hotel recommendations are all but non-existent -- but please ask away -- I'll answer anything I can.
