Sandy- try St Marks Hotel in East Village, really cheap.
this is such a sucky question - but can anyone recommend a good tour for NYC? i've been twice before but my girlfriend has not been and I'd really like to show her around, but with such limited time i thought a tour would be the way to go so that she can get a good overview. she has never seen an episode of sex and the city, so that tour is out.

Kurgy,
Apart from the Hop On - Hop Off ones, the only one I can think of that gets a good wrap is NY Partyshuttle. Unlike the HOHO tours, it's in an enclosed bus though, so that's something to consider.
Also, if you have time, make sure you sign up for a Big Apple Greeter. I got one on my last visit and it was great to have a local show you around a neighbourhood.

Kurgy, I forgot to ask if you had stayed at St Marks Hotel. If you had, what did you think of it?
I might add it to my list.

hi Mez what are the HOHO tours? I haven't stayed at St Mark's but I am seriously contemplating it. It is about $140USD/night with private bathroom for a single and $160USD/night for a double. Its in a good area. I had read about it before when i was looking for a place in 2006, but in the TimeOut Guide it said that it rented rooms by the hour, so it sounded a bit dodge. But all the TA reviews have been ok. So I may just do it. It rates higher than Sohotel.
Oh, BTW on TA - i am now macarons. After my Paris forum debacle - I decided to make a change.
