Demarias--Lompoc is probably close to one of the fires. Have you been able to reach him? I'm sure he's safe.
Suzanne--Yes, I'm feeling lucky we're not in the line of smoke today. My daughter's house is just 2 miles down the road, and she has ashes falling on her driveway, but it's perfectly clear here closer to the hills. Last year we had to evacuate my Mom (she lived just across the freeway from your folks) and the smoke and ash from that fire was HORRIBLE. Were your parents there then?

The scene you are describing is really awful, and I´m sorry for those poor people who lost their homes and their lives, but I´m glad you are all safe and sound. Stay safe.

Annette, my folks moved there in mid October just after those fires. We were worried about them having a place to move to at the time.

I have just watched the BBC news re these fires. It looks awful. Everyone stay safe. It puts an unseasoned aligot, or worry about a strike well and truly in perspective. Our thoughts and best wishes are with you.

This is definitely not the prettiest picture to wake up to. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is affected by this disaster.

I do hope all our forum members stay safe It is dreadful to see such destruction and never ceases to amaze me how vicious weather conditions and acts of God can be. Here in the UK we have too much rain causing floods and in CA theres not enough, causing fires. Add along the hurricanes and tornadoes, Tsunamis and earthquakes, just sheer devastation. It really does remind you not to complain just because the temperature has dropped a few degrees.

Wishing all the US good luck with the fires and I hope they are out soon! Here in Australia we get these sort of fires too and many times our fire fighters come over to the US to help when asked. Maybe our guys will be on their way? Have not heard but its all over our TV. Keep safe !

Anyone wishing to keep track of the San Diego fires can go to this link. The data is updated very regularly. The anticipated containment date of 'some' of the fires is noted on the website - none are soon. www.sdcountyemergency.com/

Thanks for the link toutou - One of my husband's friends lives in the hills near San Diego and the last we heard they had been evacuated but were ok. It sure makes you realize what's important when you hear about things like this...my thoughts are with all of our CA friends...

It was nice to wake uo this AM without the wind. Right now it is perfectly calm. Hopefuly the wind dying down willl help the firefighters get a handle on these fires today. The smoke is really bad. My eyes feel like they are full of sand.

We all hope things improve there, Suzanne. It must be so horrible for you to be close to those fires. Of course my heart really goes out to those who were hurt and those who lost their homes.

I haven't really been following the news these last days, so I saw my first shooting (footage ? video take ?) from the wildfires now in the 18:00-news. That is truly a frightening sight. I send you my warmest thoughts and sincerely hope that you will be OK over there, our poor friends in California. May it be over soon.

Coming from Australia where we have the same sort of fires I send my prayers to all there and a huge wish for a big rainstorm - best way to finally stop this sort of bushfire. Thoughts with you all in CA.

Ladyjicky - I clearly remember that scene from "The Thorn Birds" where the fire nearly destroyed Drogheda, the ranch.

The news on the fires is good tonight--the winds are dying down, the crews are making progress, and they're saying many people who had been evacuated will be able to return to their homes sometime tomorrow. It seems the worst is over. You guys are all so sweet to be concerned about us here! I do think all of us Californian's on the forum are fine and out of dangers way. Sis, did you get ahold of your hubby's friend? And Demarias, is your brother in law okay? Toutou, do you have family in the San Diego area? Betsy, did you have wind damage or end up with a houseful of dirt? Friends of ours near you have had horrible problems this week. Santa Ana's or not, I bet it's never been that bad since you've lived there!?! Suzanne, was the smoke better today down your way? Hope so! It was smokier here today than it has been, and the school district finally decided to shut it's doors for a few days because of poor air quality. I hope you're not still suffering My husband and I have been on standby to assist at one of the nearby evacuation centers, but so far we haven't been called in--and I can't help but think that is another sign that things are gradually getting better.

Yes Annette. We have bunches of family in the entire San Diego area. We are from there, so we have lots of friends there too. I've managed to keep up with most of them, but some have been unreachable, so we worry.
I did read that the winds had died down a bit. I hope that continues.

Sandy,
Thanks for your concern. We live in Northern California, just south of the San Francisco Airport so we were not affected by this one.
A number of firemen from cities in our county went down there to render mutual aid.
