trechic - the problem with "Pillars of the Earth" is that it is a MEGA-size monster-fat book. You cannot carry it around with you, that's for sure. So maybe you would do like I did (Children, do NOT try this at home with Gutenberg's first edition Bible).
I had brought a paperback novel which was also very fat, so I simply cut it into 3 pieces (sliced down in the back). Put some scotch tape on the pages that were without cover and OPLA ! I only had to carry a third of the weight and bulk of the original book.
So if it wasn't too expensive, you could cut it up. The content of the novel does not become one word less exciting, just because the material which conveys the story gets a bit roughed up.

Trechic, you're going to love it. Of course you're a little nervous because you're stretching your comfort zone a bit. But it'll be great and you'll be SOoooooo glad you went! Going by yourself allows you to do some offbeat things tailored to your interests alone. I especially love going to museums alone, because I can stop and stare for as long as I like without my family pacing impatiently in my peripheral vision. Or I can zip in and out in a flash without anyone suggesting that I'm a lowbrow who only came along for the gift shop! As for ripping up books, I think Gitte's idea is great. I always rip up guide books and take only the pages I need. I used to make photocopies, but then i realized that my pristine copy of "Fodor's Rome 2001" was not growing in value with each passing year.
