*Hotel, Las Vegas (sorry, couldn't resist the chance to write that title!). We're here for a weekend break with friends and family, and last night got into a discussion about whether Europeans would be charmed or horrified (probably mostly the latter, with just a bit of the former).
There are a few (although only a few) pluses -- tonight we are having dinner at Mon Ami Gabi, which actually is part of a small Chicago area chain (although I've never been to one in Chicago) that somehow manages to capture the "feel" of a Paris bistro and is a nice little dose of everyone's favorite city. Also, Le Notre has a shop here, which is fun. Otherwise, it's just Las Vegas, take it FWIW! (Last night, however, we saw Spamalot, which was great fun.)

Becky
Enjoy your "fake Paris" weekend!
I saw Spamalot last May in London, it was really fun, my daughter loved it.

We visited this hotel last year . As to how we felt about it : charmed, absolutely not . Horrified, that is too much . Let's say "bewildered" at the amount of clichés about France and at the exageration of them . But then Vegas is not about moderation and good taste, is it ? Have a great time anyway

Anne, I think this has about as much relationship to the real Paris as Caesar's has to the real Rome!

Becky, you're a meanie! I got a little frisson of excitement...then I couldn't figure out why you posted a trip report on this board...then I knew you were having a go at us. Have fun and don't bet the farm!

Have a great weekend Becky! I love that Anne can tell you exactly what a European would think of the place!

Hi, Shoesy -- brought the computer for work reasons so I could keep up while taking a little time off ("unfortunately" - not! - the e-mail was out all day, boo hoo!), so of course had to check in on "the gang" and find out what had happened since yesterday morning when I got on a plane!
But, speaking of what's going on -- when is the big day, and what have you been doing in NYC when not going to dress fittings, etc.??

The big day is August 4th, but this Thursday will also be a big day because I'll be meeting geordy in Manhattan. ;D

Not yet, so I'm looking forward to it. The truth is that I never thought it could happen because I assumed she would be working, and I'm not free to meet on the weekends.

Well, make sure to let us know how the meeting goes. I think it's fair to say that we all have a mental picture of what each other looks like. Some have posted pictures, so it's easier. In my mind, geordy is tall, slim, ash/streaked should length hair. Tell me how far off I am after you meet her, Shoesy.

I'll tell you right now Happy, skip the slim part, think curvy gone a bit to middle aged spread(in the middle!) average height 5'5". Sorry Cybee, lighter hair, kind of a dark or reddish blond depending on Sun. And curly. Now we all remember the photo of Shoesy from TA plus the legs shot!! If you hear of some strange news from NYC on Thurs. it had nothing to do with us!

Anne - I think maybe this phenonenon is like a charactature of a person, as distinct from a portrait. They took a few elements that might be considered "French" or "Parisian" and exagerated them for effect (e.g., the supports under the covered area where the taxis arrive, which are meant to remind the viewer of Belle Epoque train stations, I think). I'm not saying it all works as planned, but that's probably the thinking behind some of the things that left you shaking your head!

Ah, yes, Geordy, now I see you have already told me you are a strawberry blond! But I have always imagined you brunette! Some habits just die hard! Yes, we all can just put Shoesy's TA avatar together with her ballet shoes and viola..we have Shoesy! Yes, I suspect we shall all hear quite the "strange news" arising out of NYC tomorrow..and we will all know who was involved! Likely, also, People and Vanity Fair will be covering this meeting extraordinaire tomorrow?

Well, geordy and I still have to decide on our exact plans for Thursday. I'm just happy to be given the opportunity to be meeting our strawberry blond forumist. As for me, I'm just a plain Jane, though that isn't my name. ;D

Well I was befuddled by this thread,, had to read opening line a couple of times to "get it", all the while thinking" I don't remember Becky saying she was going to Paris again this summer!?" I think the anology of Ceasars being as " Roman" as Rome was very apt.
We took my French grandmother to Las Vegas in 1980, my dad splurged and had us stay at Caesars ,, I think he was trying to impress his mother. He did, but not how one would hope. After a long day of touring around we checked in, my grandmother and I shared a room, we both went to the bed and lay back exhausted,, only to burst out laughing at the sight of us in the mirror on the ceiling,, how tacky,,, LOL. My grandmother thought Las Vegas was the tackiest place she had ever seen. She did however love San Francisco!
PS I forgot to say we all loved the Ann Margaret show in Vegas,, that is one thing Las Vegas has always done well in, the shows are amazing,, hope you have time to take some in Becky!
